I don't see the need to provide any member with any special needs or wants.
Here are the rules...'You agree to not use the Service to submit or link to any Content which is defamatory, abusive, hateful, threatening, spam or spam-like, likely to offend, contains adult or objectionable content....
All it needs is someone in administration, or a moderator, to monitor and ensure those rules are obeyed.

Nakal wroteSo basically with a big post count someone has contributed all great valueable posts?
Not sure where you see me bitching about anything in Indonesia, you probably confuse me with someone else.
I have used this forum as a source of information by reading the posts and using the search function.
Was that so wrong, or should I have asked the same questions over and over again so my post count would be approved by you?
If that's the case, I can spam the forum asking these questions but then I would end up with people bitching at me and pointing to the search button.... that's how this forum (or at least quite a few members) currently communicates.
You have either not comprehended my post or wish to spin it in such an immature way I'm wondering which school-form you're in.
I'll repeat...if you wish to make the forum more interesting so that those "new contributions full of sh|t made by sad people' don't command the forum....you need to make some interesting posts...don't simply criticize others who make the effort.

I also enjoy reading @Markit posts. He is also one of the few people to start new discussions.
The main problem I have is that he can be very harsh to new comers. A couple of times people who joined the forum, asked a couple of questions and then asked to have their accounts removed. It is disappointing as it is not easy to get new people to sign up.
So good entertainment for people who have been here a while, but not good when it comes to encouraging new people to participate. Someone mentioned giving "tough love" in another thread and while that might be the case, the person thinking about moving to Bali will likely just ask their questions elsewhere in one of the many forums/social media sites available.
I have thought about creating a separate forum just for @Markit if he was interested and only people who choose to read/contribute could join that forum.
Any thoughts?

Actually, a separate Markit forum is an inspired idea. It preserves the entertainment value and occasional useful comments, but in a “walled garden”. It would be well worth trying, if he will play ball. Come on, are you all saying you don't laugh?
Kim26
Davita,
I understand your concerns. I don't want to start a flame war. You are all active contributors to the forum and spend your time there. I am happy to accept your view.

There's no flame war Kim...you agreed a separate forum was a good idea...I tried to think how it could work and came up with nothing so I just wondered how you imagine it would work. From a practical perspective I still cannot envisage how it can work so I'd be happy to be enlightened.

How do you envisage such a separate forum could work?
If a newbie joins and asks a question on the open forum...are you inferring that the question will be asked/answered twice. Once on the open forum and, with a warning, again in the 'walled garden' where only Markit & friends have access.
I can imagine our esteemed Admin spending 24/7 just ensuring one doesn't spill over to the other.
I have a better idea...those that find 'gods' posts amusing why not send him your email and he can humor you all day long......privately!

Sorry, couldn't disagree more strongly.
I have always believed one should conduct themselves on a forum the way they would interact with others in the real world. Markit has shown time and time again he is incapable of this small endeavour of politeness and in fact has gone out of his way to make an arsehole of himself. It is a pattern of behaviour that has continued unabated since the day he joined this forum. One of his earliest posts was titled 'Nailing the Dishwasher' where he basically belittled all members in mixed relationships insinuating those of us with Indonesian partners were only in it for the sexual exploitation we could extract from our 'pembantu' brides. It will stick in my mind forever as this was a time when a large number of contributors had Indonesian partners including the then owner of the forum himself, Bert. There is no way a normal person would conduct themselves like this in the real world unless they were asking for a black eye at best yet time and time again this is Markit's modus operandi.
Further, I believe the majority of the 'advice' he contributes is merely to blow wind up his own arse. Time and time again his contributions segway to how wonderful his life is in the East and how everybody else is a halfwit because they're not neighbouring him on all sides. Sorry, but if his demeanor is a an example of the result of life in Karangasem, then they need to excise that part of the island from the rest quick smart before rot spreads. He is a sad, nasty, rude, vitriolic, puerile disgrace of a man clearly in need of some professional help. I cannot speak more lowly of him. I almost pity him.
Sincerely Admin, you have a wealth of great people on this site, be rid of this pestilence for good and let them speak unhindered. The likes of Johnnycool, Davita, Mugwump et al are what makes this site great. He has already scared off too many, don't let the trend continue.
Yours sincerely,
Adam

I agree with both Adam and Davita (posts #34 and 35) and acknowledge that whilst he is a massive twat and someone should hit him with his keyboard, he does on rare occasions does provide some use to the forum and share his local knowledge. Should he return (whether he has been temporarily banned or just off having a massive sulk), I think that anything he posts should be closely monitored for its content and swiftly removed if it could be interoperated as non-constructive.
Admin - Is there the capacity to have a dislike button? Maybe, if there is, any post could be automatically removed if it receives more than 2 dislikes?? Just an idea.
davita
Whilst liking Adam's presentation and English writing skill (post #33)....I'm not so agreed that Admin should 'be rid' of Markit.
Markit has written decent posts, particularly about his travels and others about BBQ's, scooters, etc. and he has local knowledge which is useful.
The issue I see is his belittling posts to new joiners are counter to welcoming them to continue their contributions and, due to his vitriol, he also fails to make his point....even if it is practical.
His controversial posts inspire debate but, when he doesn't like the way the conversation is going, he becomes bullying and resorts to personal insults and abuse. This contravenes forum rules and normal 'give and take' etiquette...as Adam's post implies.
I would hope he can just obey the forum rules like the rest of us aspire. If he cannot accept then it's his right to leave.
Mark
I agree with Davita's posts #s 23 and 34. I have found many of Markit's posts relevant, informative and interesting. He has breathed life into this forum when times were slow...The key issue is reasonable compliance with the forum guidelines, which should apply to all users without favor. Of course, what crosses the line can in many cases be a matter of debate, so at the end of the day the admin ought to be more proactive in drawing the line. Personally I see no reason for vitriolic personal attacks by anyone on the forum.
tel522
In the expat indo forum they have a caged thread , where some members get full on , but there are limits, ie extreme personal abuse but everything else goes , maybe that could be a solution .
davita
The idea of a cage, or similar, is used on many sites but normally restricted to members with some seniority...rarely used by new-joiners which, imo, is the main problem here.
One member seems to take delight in responding to new-joiners in a manner not befitting a welcome introduction to the forum. Consequently, we all miss-out on not having some new-joiners sticking around.
That issue can be easily addressed and many members have already responded to that...it's now up to Admin to act on those suggestions.
tel522
ya exactly if the aforesaid mr markit or anyone else, feels like an argument , they should be able to do it in the cage but obviously be restricted by admin on the normal forum .
Mark
A 'cage' is a good idea for no-holds-barred discussions that otherwise might fun afoul of normal civil language and topics... However, it should be restricted to members with a certain number of posts to avoid trolls. Admin, over to you...
Come to think of it, didn't we have a 'member's only' place on the last version of this forum? What happened to it?
