Been here a long time through two different administrations and two different user names and the only thing that matters with that experience is whether any conclusions can be drawn.........I guess. One thing that comes to mind is what is the purpose of this forum? Can it not be to provide information to those less knowledgable than ourselves that come here innocently trying to obtain answers about Bali without being criticized and caste aside for their ignorance? That isn't a contribution, and each of us can draw our own conclusions about what category it may fall into? We all may have differences of opinion and being able to exercise our own to provide another slant or new information is still instructive if we are willing to gain from another's insight or enjoin in friendly debate. The need for an individual to somehow gain some sort of needs by consistently being destructive to others can't possibly be constructive to the whole of this site. Certain persons have been ostracized in the past for their indiscretions when their input has been less than constructive, and it then raises the question to how far can this site grow in a positive and contributive way if one or a few can demonize it so as to be rejective rather than contributory? That is what I as a member am asking and would certainly like to learn the opinions of others.

Re: post # 1 I wholeheartedly agree with mugwump's post. I've not been a member as long as he/she has but anyone can see my contribution count. This forum concentrates on Bali but is similar to another forum encompassing all of Indonesia and many members here are members of the other. Both suffered from some destructive elements in the past but the other forum, recently under better management, seems to have removed those members who had that pernicious and venomous attitude...particularly to new members. It is still combative but, generally, in a positive manner befitting adults....and personal insults are moderated. IMO this forum needs to address the issue of one acerbic person ruining what offers useful, informative information... yet encourages aggressive debate but retaining some element of social dignity. We all know who is being referred here, so I wont mention, but the owners need to manage this before the forum loses all its contributor and those who believe in talking into a mirror will be the only one left.

Thanks so much for that Ronnie! Where did the time go? As you can see if you follow the thread a while it was the "school of hard knocks" and that guy took no prisoners. No matter what time of day or night you wrote anything on the forum he was there immediately. Bert the previous owner of the forum gave Roy the push and said Roy threatened him with all sort of viciousness. Different times now but the old mantra still holds true "if you don't like something, just scroll on by". A BRUTAL FACT: As the management mentioned in a recent thread where someone was bitching about yours truly - when I don't contribute the forum dies. That means you are a bunch of boring assholes. You want to buck the forum up and diminish my dominance? Then say something interesting!! WOW! what a novel idea!!! Om Swastiastu

This might interest you. Why don’t you do what Roy eventually had to do, [I]ie[/I], start your own website/forum and rack off? In the Roy days, many of us were still on dial-up connections, and then along came ADSL. You supposedly have a “super” computer and recently, a fibre-optic connection, so what’s stopping you? Your gross egotism seems to know no bounds, and borders on being pathological. Before, or if, you start your own your own forum, get some good psychiatric help. Otherwise, some of the “boring assholes” from here might join it and make your on-line “life” more miserable than it already is.

The main reason I don't rack off is because I'm often told that what I have to say here has helped quite a number of people to build their dreams, make the transition or ease their way into Balinese life. Simple really. Thirst for valid information was my motivation for coming here all those years ago and the forum was of immense help and answered all my questions even with the likes of Roy around. I had to take the good with the bad and I found both to be valuable if for no other reason that it showed me the kind of people I would be among when I finally landed on the island and with persistence and wider questioning I got to what I wanted to know and where I wanted to be. I still think in some way I owe that to those who are also interested in living on Bali. BUT I also think I owe a wake up call to all those that in my estimation and with the hindsight of 10 years of living here are headed for disaster. AND especially to those that seem bent on taking small children with them. You old farts that find this a problem can rack off and if you want to tell me that in person I'm happy to share my address by PM. Simple really.

There’s no rocket science involved here. 1. Nobody is denying that you have helped people based on your experiences in Bali. 2. Some of us “old farts” are getting tired of your acerbic “wit”. 3. Forum members don’t like being abused by somebody who flings global insults at them. 4. You don’t know how to apologise and/or tone down your specious rhetoric. 5. Maybe we should try to take a more objective view of the kind of image that we as expats are projecting to others new to this site. Those of us that have been here awhile have become adjusted to things as they are, and perhaps like my self are just a bit lazy about really thinking of our selves as being representative of our community on this the only Bali site. If we are concerned should we be represented largely by some tyrant who although contributing on some level helpfully, also establishes solely by himself just who pleases and who does not, and then cruelly dispenses with those he does not favor. Think about it as someone who comes here and blunders into an area that could possibly be something for which upon researching has been addressed before, and for which there is ample information to satisfy his quest. Unknowing he/she is ruefully reproached and never faces this situation again because of ill treatment. Not everyone visiting here are those that wish to become members and stay, but would feel happier about returning if not so abruptly attacked as is all too frequently the case and influences the persona projected to which we all as members belong. Realize that by ignoring the tyrant we combine with him whether we approve of him or not. There are many in the expat community that could make contributions or have knowledge and opinions that perhaps avoid us. And for this we suffer.

I think that one of the issues Markit, is that you believe that you are offering a "wake up call" or giving a dose of reality, whereas in reality you are simply just being a complete jerk. Speaking for myself, I see your comments as more of an attack rather than tough love or offering any kind of assistance. That being said however, you have welcomed a couple of new members in the last couple of weeks without your usual onslaught of unwarranted abuse. So good on you I guess! Either you are taking some of the previous comments from other forum members on board or you weren't drunk enough to be your usual twat self.

As a member for the last 11 years and, according to post count, contributed only 184 times, it surely isn't a surprise you find any contribution full of sh*t....according to your parameter. I think most of us regulars (not the sad ones) agree with you but try to be positive. Why not you help by posting 'good' stuff....i.e. bitch about anything in Indonesia,,,that's a good start...:D

So basically with a big post count someone has contributed all great valueable posts? Not sure where you see me bitching about anything in Indonesia, you probably confuse me with someone else. I have used this forum as a source of information by reading the posts and using the search function. Was that so wrong, or should I have asked the same questions over and over again so my post count would be approved by you? If that's the case, I can spam the forum asking these questions but then I would end up with people bitching at me and pointing to the search button.... that's how this forum (or at least quite a few members) currently communicates.

Well, call me superficial, but Markit's posts make me laugh. And amongst the rudeness and vitriol, his advice is sometimes good. If he doesn't come back, then I will miss him. IMHO we should not take ourselves too seriously - he is comedy gold, and contributes an occasional flash of seriously good advice. We plan to retire in Ubud in the next year or so (yes Markit, I know your views on Ubud...) I will pack the cheese. Give him a break. He can be offensive, but helpful. I suspect he would be a very funny lunch companion. I vote to keep him.
