President Approves Teachers’ Salary Increase

Speaking after a meeting with President Prabowo Subianto at the Presidential Palace complex on Tuesday (26/11/24,) Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Abdul Mu’ti, announced that the President has approved a plan to increase teachers’ welfare by hiking the salary of non-civil servant (ASN) teachers by IDR 2 million (approximately USD 122) and ASN teachers by one-time their basic salary, according to reporting from Antara News. However, he did not mention when the policy will take effect.

Mu’ti said that in the case of ASN teachers, only the nominal basic salary will be taken into account, emphasizing it will be “Only one basic salary.”

The minister has requested Prabowo to announce the policy at the commemoration of National Teachers’ Day (HGN) at Rawamangun Velodrome, East Jakarta, on Friday (28/11/24,) says Antara News.

As per the agenda, representatives of teachers from various regions have been invited to the commemoration.

“The President has conveyed his willingness to open and speak at the commemoration of the 2024 National Teacher’s Day themed ‘Great Teachers, Strong Indonesia,’” Mu’ti confirmed, a theme which reflects the important role of teachers as agents of learning, civilization, and determinants of human resource quality.

Antara News reports that on Monday (25/11/24,) Mu’ti said that his ministry will improve teacher welfare by providing certification allowances rather than salary increases, explaining that “Our ministry does not have the authority to increase teacher salaries; the authority lies with other ministries. However, we can improve teacher welfare through certification.”

He said that the ministry can improve teacher welfare by providing certification allowances after they pass the Teacher Professional Education (PPG) certification, which is why the ministry is currently preparing training for 850,000 teachers to participate and pass the PPG certification in 2025, according to Antara News.
