Jokowi Launches Construction of MRT Jakarta East-West Line

According to the website of The President of The Republic of Indonesia, President Jokowi officially launched the construction of the Jakarta MRT East-West Line Phase 1, which will connect Medan Satria to Tomang along 24.5 kilometers. The launching event took place at the MH Thamrin Jakarta MRT Station Project on Wednesday (11/9/24.)

In his remarks, President Jokowi spoke of the success of the first phase of MRT construction, which has been operating since March 2019. This phase connects Lebak Bulus to the Hotel Indonesia (HI) Roundabout.

“Phase 1 north-south has changed the face of Jakarta, has changed the face of Jakarta transportation, and also our country, Indonesia,” said the President.

The President also highlighted the important role of MRT in the mobility of people in Jakarta. In fact, since its operation, MRT Jakarta has provided services to more than 120 million passengers, a significant number. “It’s not a small amount,” he said.

Currently, the construction of phase 2a of the North-South MRT Line connecting Bundaran HI with Kota is still ongoing. However, the government is determined to expand the MRT network in Jakarta to be more integrated.

“We want to expand and broaden the scope of development,” said the President.

The President also emphasized that this project will strengthen Jakarta’s position as a global city and agglomeration center with modern public transportation. The President said that the construction of the MRT is an effort to create a better and more sustainable modern transportation civilization.

“This civilization is truly a modern transportation civilization, which will truly be present after the MRT is completely completed,” said the President.

The East-West MRT Line project is expected to not only improve the mobility of Jakarta residents, but also support economic growth by accelerating connectivity in Jakarta and its surroundings.

According to Japan Today, the project is funded by a loan of nearly USD 1 billion from Japan.

Also present to accompany the President at the inauguration were the Japanese Ambassador to Indonesia Masaki Yasushi, the Indonesian Ambassador to Japan Heri Akhmadi, the Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi, and the Acting Governor of DKI Jakarta Heru Budi Hartono.
