Public order police (Satpol PP) picked up 13 singers with a punk appearance yesterday on Jl. Diponegoro, west Denpasar.
The group was arrested on Monday by a patrol that had been summoned to deal with traffic congestion in the area. The punks were taken to Denpasar police station.
“They were apprehended while sitting in the lobby at one of the hotels on Jl. Diponegoro,” said Denpasar Police chief Alit Wiradana. He added that none of the punks carried proof of identity, although one claimed to be living in Denpasar.
Wiradana said members of the punk community sometimes caused a traffic disturbance when crossing the road. He continued that they would be handed over to the provincial Social Services Department.
Desi, one of the girls in the group, said she was from Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, and had come to Denpasar for a concert, sleeping rough during the visit. “We might take shelter anywhere, as long as it is out of the rain,” she said.
Another of the punks, Putu Yudiantara from West Denpasar, claimed to have once worked as a garbage collector in the city and, currently homeless, had joined a punk community.
“I’m tired of picking up trash in Denpasar, ” said Yudiantara.
