U.S. FAA had prohibited U.S. carriers from flying in the region.
Why did Malaysian Airlines figure it was safe to fly through that airspace?

On this date in 1996, TWA 800 went down off the eastern coast of New York. Many people still believe that TWA 800 was brought down by surface to air missile.
Certain militants like to celebrate anniversaries by creating havoc on those days.

It looks like it was a 9K37 Buk surface to air missile - radar guided, with a radar proximity fuse 70 kg warhead.

Why in gods name would a commercial airline be flying over a war zone ?

If you look at flight radar.com, you will se that airlines are avoiding the area over Eastern Ukraine and Crimea. To fly through the zone is a money saving exercise - short cut=shorter distance=less fuel=less money spent. People die for profit!

^ yeah...but....I mean really what can you say.

Some tragic stories coming out of the australian camp....one elderly couple onboard lost relatives on the other malaysian plane they cannot find...why on earth they would then fly malaysian is beyond me....and parents that sent their kids back on the plane separately as they were travelling later.
