Can someone please outline the process and pitfalls of bringing used household items/ personal effects/ library etc from Sydney to Ubud.?
Is there a reliable shipper ex Sydney?
What documentation is required for Indonesian Customs? What form does this need to take?
Is there a company in Bali that undertakes this work ex Sydney?
How easy is the transfer from the Java port to Ubud?
Is the load weather protected ?

Unless you very recently got a KITAS, there is no point. Even then, there barely is a point.

I would sell the random stuff you have no attachment to and buy it new here. Much more fun, cheaper and definitely less hassle.

Ubud, Bali
Reasons contributing to this "no point" assessment could include:

1. buying furniture here is relatively cheap, and locally made wooden furniture is good, so you may be better off selling all furniture on eBay and buying again here
2. domestic appliances are not well suited to here, so again its better to sell them off, buy locally here, and use local service when needed
3. loads of linen will just go mouldy
4. workshop tools and garden tools can be managed the same way, sell off and re-buy after getting used to the life style here. Gardening may be done by a gardener, many things you may do yourself may now be done for you quite cheaply

So if you eliminate bulky items you are left with personal items, photos, keepsakes, cameras, ipods, laptops, etc. If you get it down to only about 50 Kg per person, then just pay the airline for extra checked baggage. If its more than that get it air-freighted. Shipping containers go through Surabaya and there are many stories of losses and extra charges.

Hope that helps.

find several international moving-company's in Sydney for quotes (costs an services), you can do this online by for example folowing this link Shipping Companies | Moving Companies | Removal Companies | International Removals .
The moving-company in Sydney takes care of everything, packing, paperwork, etcetc...their "partner" in Indonesia takes care of things on this end, clearing customs at receiving port (no importtax when you supply a copy of your kitas to moving-company in Sydney) and transport from port to your adress in Indonesia (Ubud).
I don't exactly know what you mean with "weather protected" ? Goods in a shipping-container are not exposed to the weather. But there are several levels of insurance to choose from when shipping your goods.

Thank you Gilbert
Re shipping containers, actually they aren't waterproof, they always leak at the doors!
The items we are bringing include a professional library of many 1000 books and publications as well as a large collection of Asian antiques collected over 40 years as well as a lifetimes collection of sculpting and painting tools and equipment. All highly specialised and unique to my practice. I certainly don't plan to exhibit or sell in Indonesia, my work is handled in other countries .
I certainly don't plan to import items readily found in Indonesia. Especially any domestic items.
Hence my need to locate a reliable method that has some certainty in care and delivery.

Thanks
As to my current IT needs, I run four of the largest landscape monitors and the largest processors that Apple make, with an A3 scanner and two AO ten ink colour printers
With all the necessary equipment that all this requires.
All necessary to continue to my work outside Indonesia to pay for a change of lifestyle.
A lot more than.50kg of accompanied luggage.
Also please see my earlier post as to all the other gear .
The cost is not an issue, delivery and care is, however

if costs is not an issue, then I highly recommend Crown Relocations Removalists - Local, Interstate, International Removalists
tailor-made solutions regarding packaging, since you are bringing valuable and specialty goods. Another +, they have an office in Surabaya and also on Bali.. so from beginning to end it is handled by 1 company.
Personal experience : Back in 2001 they shipped my porsche boxter from Gran Canaria to Amsterdam, and I have used them in 2008 shipping books and art from Amsterdam to Bali...both times excellent service and received everything without any damage.

Marklindsay can you please keep us up to date as you go along, Last time I Used unaccompanied baggage they checked everything, couldn't find anything wrong so they said the paper work was wrong, came back The next day with paper work in hand
everyone was smiling, I only had to pay for the one day storage Rp70,000. I was told that books, CD, DVD, Tapes etc needs to go through censorship, have all your paper work in order, list everything in the container, you may need receipts of things as well.
Good luck

Thanks for the heads up re censorship!
I had completely overlooked that scenario .
Not that I possess anything that in the West might be considered risqué , but given the Catholic nature of my fine art book collection as well as , say, a signed , first edition Salman Rushdie ( of that THAT book fame), I will carefully vet my inventory !

if he goes crown, he doesn't need luck
crown comes with the container to your doorstep, everything that gets packed and goes into the container is numbered and written down with a small description on the paper (packlist) that accompanies the shipping..client obviously needs to be present to check and maybe give direction as to how to handle certain items (the specialised unique goods), later when all is done sign that paper (packlist). It's like sort of a "carbon print through thingy paper" and becomes 4 pieces, 1 for customer, 1 for sydney, 1 goes by mail to either surabaya or bali (also by email) and 1 goes with the container (the original in English). supply 3 copy's of passport and KITAS, obvious what for I guess.
Censorship must be something new or newly enforced or just blahblah from customs, I had some porn wich could not have been overlooked when they would have just only opened a box :icon_cool:
as Crown takes care of your things from door to door, I doubt there will be a request for receipts...on manifest the shipment is also described as "used household goods/used personal effects" ...
Oh yeah...Shipment must arrive within 3 months of the issuedate of your KITAS to be cleared as "duty free" , for smooth clearance, use only boxes from the shippers (crown)
Oh yeah (2), you are allowed to have 1 seashipment and 1 airshipment of householdgoods/personal effects Duty Free

Recap,

Documents required for Household goods/personal effects Customs Clearance:
-Passport with Visa pages
-Residence Permit (KITAS card)
-Work Permit (IKTA) - valid for at least 12 months not on a retirement-kitas
-Pack List– original, in English; mail/fax/email a copy to the servicing agent well in advance
-Bill of Lading or Air Waybill – original, prepaid and fax copy prior to vessel’s arrival
-Non – Negotiable Bill of Lading - copy
-Authorization Letter (SuratKuasa) – allowing Destination Agent to arrange Customs clearance Crown Sydney will have a standard letter for this

So are you saying you can only get the duty free shipment if you have a Work Permit?

We have a retirement visa and shipped a crockery dinner set (wedding gift 27 years ago) from Canada to Jakarta airport using UPS.
When the boxes arrived they were searched and then the customs asked for our boarding passes. Who to hell keeps boarding passes after a month. There was no question about our kitas...only about our boarding pass???
Still they would not allow the box in until we paid money. We now have the most expensive/old dinner set in Indonesia.
Best use a door/door service then you don't have confrontation with those customs officers.....I think they make-up rules as they go along.

by the way, if people bring stuff as excess bagage or unaccompanied bagage..that is not considered to be a "shipment"...see list of necessary papers that is needed for a shipment to clear customs as duty free

Hi Marklindsay,
I hope to be moving to bali in the next few months from Melbourne, I will be using Jetta to move my stuff as I will be on a social visa and was told i could not ship a container- so am madly seeing things now although have many things i want to bring. I think Jetta has an office in Sydney, they were very helpful, you can send paintings.
They quoted around $3 a kilo for a few hundred kilos and you just collect from airport

Cash only fee's????? Sounds above board!!!! I'm sure it will cost more than I will want to pay but don't see any other solution.
