I received the message cut and pasted below from Rucina Ballinger of YKIP here in Bali. YKIP is a first rate organization professionally run and results orientated. Their work with the victims of the Ache tsunami was truly amazing. If you feel so inclined to assist, you can be sure your funds will go directly into aid. Selamat hari raya Galungan!

YKIP, working with our partners the Annika Linden Foundation (ALF) and KIDS (Kuta International Disaster Scholarship), have started a new Victims Support Fund specifically for the Indonesian victims of of the latest Bali atrocity. This fund will be managed by YKIP. ALF, PT Mitrais, David and Elizabeth Magson, and Douglas Peckham have already pledged US$111,000, with the first $100,000 coming from ALF, to get this fund underway. These monies will be used to help Indonesians in need of emergency operations, cover medical and funereal costs, and the education of those children who have lost a parent. Surplus monies in the Victims Support Fund will be used to first pay for tertiary education for the 2002 bomb victim’s children, and otherwise to assist YKIP’s ongoing programs, in particular the KEMBALI scholarship program and The Children’s Hearing Impairment Project.

There is not an unemployment benefits system in Indonesia and the families who lost a bread-winner will be especially hard-hit. Coupled with the 100% increase in petrol prices (also on October 1, 2005) and the fact that this latest bombing will cripple tourism on the island, times are going to be particularly hard. We want to do what we can to assist the locals through these difficult times.

All of the members of YKIP, (ALF), KIDS and PT MITRAIS are deeply shocked and saddened by last Saturday's terrorist bombings in Bali that killed 26 people and injured 107 (half of them Indonesians). The bombs exploded at the popular, family-oriented restaurants, Kafe Nyoman and Kafe Menega on Jimbaran Beach and at another family restaurant, Rajas, at Kuta Square, close to Kuta Beach. Victims included Indonesians, Koreans, Japanese, and Australians.

There has been a well co-coordinated, team approach on behalf of all agencies involved. Indonesian and Australian medical teams in Sanglah Hospital are working closely together treating the injured and conducting necessary evacuations. The situation as of this moment is a solid testament to the efforts of a large, well coordinated, multi-national and multi-talented team. It is clear that valuable lessons have been learnt from the events of 2002 as evidenced by the short time in which so much has been achieved to assist those in need.

At this early stage, it is difficult to gauge the needs faced by the victims of this attack. While we are prepared to meet the most immediate needs of some of the victims, additional assistance will most certainly be needed. Emergency and medical officials are far better prepared to deal with the situation now than they were in the past, but additional funding remains the primary need.

Donations of medical supplies and clothing are of secondary importance at the moment. YKIP, ALF and KIDS are committed to ensure that all funds are used in a responsible and professional manner.

YKIP is a foundation dedicated to improving the lives of the needy in Bali through Health and Education Projects. Established only days after the Bali Bomb Blast of October 12, 2002, YKIP’s founders were business people, doctors, officials and volunteers who assisted during the crisis. It soon became evident that in order to accommodate the tons (literally) of medical supplies and monetary donations from well-wishers around the world, a transparent and responsible organization needed to be established. As many of our founders are members of Rotary International, we were able to establish YKIP as such an organization in the eyes of potential donors. We received endorsements from the Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, the diplomatic community in Bali, and the Governor of Bali. Our members come from a variety of faiths and from many different nationalities.

The founders set up and helped to organize the Bali Recovery Group which coordinated the work of the NGOs in the first six confusing months after the blast. All of YKIP’s projects in 2002 and 2003 were related to the direct victims of the blast. However, most of their needs are now provided for. Based on the success of our initial projects in 2003 (Children’s Education Fund, MREC or Medical Resource and Education Centre and the Wayang Kulit Trauma Counseling), YKIP has turned its focus to Health and Education issues--those projects that can improve the lives of the poor who live on Bali.

YKIP’s role is to raise money for targeted projects on Bali and provide easy access for institutions and individuals to respond to as well as a trustworthy and transparent system to work with. Our efforts are intended as a living tribute to the 202 dead and 300 injured victims of the blast.
