A gang of three thieves were arrested in South Denpasar by police officers yesterday after allegedly pretending to seek donations for ogoh-ogoh construction before Nyepi.

The suspects had reportedly been robbing people’s donations for three months and have been identified as MDS, SD, and WP.

They allegedly robbed 15 locations and stole numerous electronic devices such as cell phones and laptops when they approached unoccupied homes.

“We really were making an ogoh-ogoh, if no one was home, we’d rob the place, but if someone was home, we’d give them a donations form,” said MSD, a suspect in the case.

The thieves were building their ogoh-ogoh on Jalan Sesetan, but operated on Panjer, Tukad Badung, Jalan Pendidikan, Tukad Batanghari all the way to Jalan Pendidikan.

Police managed to recover two laptops and a cell phone that had not been sold according to authorities.

The suspects allegedly sold the laptops and phones for Rp. 500,000 to Rp 900,000 per unit.

This is not the first time people asking for donations were actually thieves, last year a gang was busted asking for donations during the kite festival.
