Bali’s average hotel occupancy rate has dramatically dropped, following the closure of Ngurah Rai International Airport during the ongoing APEC Summit.

Bali’s hospitality industry has reported only 35 percent occupancy since early October 2013, with many hotel properties receiving a slew of cancellations from clients, the Jakarta Post reported.

“We usually experience an average occupancy rate of 75 percent in October,” Indonesian Hotels and Restaurants Association (PHRI) chairman Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardana Sukawati said.

While the APEC Summit may have brought economic prosperity to host properties, “other hotels around Bali do not enjoy such good business,” Mr Sukawati said.

However, “the summit will significantly boost our island’s brand as an international tourist destination,” Mr Sukawati added.

New luxury hotel, LV8 Resort Hotel, located in the Canggu region has only 15 percent occupancy.

“The significant drop in our hotel occupancy is just because of the airport closure during the summit… after the summit, we will be facing high occupancy,” LV8 Resort Hotel corporate director sales and marketing Jeffrey Wibisono said.
