A MELBOURNE grandfather who fell neck-deep into a sewer in Bali is battling a serious infection after his holiday turned into a nightmare.

Adrian Kellerman, 69, is on an antibiotic drip at Peninsula Private Hospital to heal a deep wound on his right leg, which he received when he fell into a cesspit.

Mr Kellerman was in Bali to celebrate his son’s 50th birthday when he fell through a gaping hole in the sidewalk.

“He fell up to his shoulders in crap. He was covered in it, his shoes were full of it, it was all over him,” his wife, Maree Kellerman, said.

The family was walking home from dinner in Legian, near Kuta, when Mr Kellerman tripped and fell into a 170cm-deep hole filled with human waste.

Mr Kellerman’s daughter and son-in-law managed to pull him from the sludge in the middle of a downpour.

But Mr Kellerman sliced open his right shin in the fall.

“It was pitch black in the torrential rain and there was blood everywhere,” Mrs Kellerman said.

The hotel rang the local hospital, which arranged a doctor’s visit.

“A doctor came out, cleaned it and stitched it and came back on Sunday. But I thought it still looked badly infected; I wasn’t happy with it,” Mrs Kellerman said.

Mr Kellerman returned home to Frankston but the cut had become badly infected and he was admitted to hospital on January 10.
