Why Aussies love to go to Bali

My daughters birthday tomorrow and my wife has a day off so I thought I might book a room in Southport for one night and take the girls to Seaworld. If I want anything half decent, I'll have to pay at least $500, just for the room. $500 for a very ordinary room with a couple of beds and no...

    Thieving staff

If you have a business how do you control staff from stealing from you? I am not talking about stealing everything in your cash register but small amounts over a period of time. For example you ask them to buy 10 loaves of bread and they only buy 5 and pocket the difference. Or a customer buys...

    Pizza in Bali?

I hadn't had a pizza in Bali that I thought was good enough in all the years I have been coming here or living here. Yesterday in Carrefours I bought 2 Dr Oetker frozen pizzas to try. (They are new to Carrefours here in Singaraja) They are the best ever frozen pizza I ever had. Just cook...

What is it with cheese on/with cakes here??

Last week, Ketut gave me about 6-7 Lady Finger bananas. I love their taste but they ended up in the fridge and that was it. Today we looked in the fridge together and she picked up the pack of darkened bananas and looked at me as if to say 'These are a gone-er'. I said 'Make a banana cake'...

    General feeling of uncertainty

I was wondering if anyone gets the feeling Indonesia might be facing some tough times ahead with regards to business outlook. Rupiah is down, and the government seems to be doing anything they can to stop foreigners from working here. A huge amount of bad press in general about Bali/Indonesia...

Hi All Wanted to get some advice on what place would be best for a big initial shop when we first move to Bali- CarreFour or Lotte Mart? From what I have seen online Lotte seems more like a sort of 'warehouse' style place where you are buying stables in bulk and CarreFour looks more like a...

Off to the jungle, to see the caveman

Two days back in a moment of madness I thought I may go visit Markit. I rang him and said "I am coming your way". His American accent is hard to understand but I heard him say something about "a cough" before the phone went dead. Not to be deterred I rang him back and said "I have cheese and I...

    Make Arak Drinkable (almost?)

Take real passionfruit juice (Markisa) freeze it into ice cubes, take 4 or 5 in a long drink glass and add 3 fingers of Arak. Top off with sprite. Good sundowner and builds you up as it's knocking you down. Tastes pretty good too!

    Coconut milk shortage

Our staff said they can't find coconut milk anywhere and I read on Facebook there is some kind of shortage? It seems a strange ingredient to have a shortage of in Indonesia. Is there only one company producing the stuff? We have a few coconut trees, but it is quite an effort to make it yourself.
