Makassar is a city of 1.3M people and like any other big city it has its pros and cons. It is however described as the gateway to the east of Indonesia. I have been coming here for over 40 years and have my own house for the last 16.
I take 16 tablets a day morning and evening. They come prepacked in a plastic case with each day of the week marked. It also has the chemists form with the tablets shown and how many to take. I will be bring 8 of these packets with me as I have done for years. Only once have I ever been asked...
Just getting ready for my annual trip to Indonesia from Manchester on the 21st. Staying for two months and will visit Makassar, Tanah Toraja and hopefully get a week or two in Bali. I see this forum has got more professional with updates again. A far cry from when Bert used to run in back in the...
I have not visited this blog for some time and I have just noticed that on my periodic visit to the Balipod site. I have been on Balipod for many years and this all started as I intended to retire in Bali. Instead I decided to stay in the UK but to come "HOME" to Indonesia twice a year for 2-3...
Although not in Bali I can live on about 20 million Rp per month. This does not include rent as I have my own house. Food is going up daily as we approach Xmas and new year. A kilo of tomatoes at the local market for example as gone from Rp5000 to Rp15000 in three weeks. Eggs also are going up...
Well its been taken into law today although it will not be enforced for 3 years. Since I first came here in 1983 it has become more and more Islamised. Here in Makassar you cannot even buy a beer from shops and supermarkets. I am just glad the people are still as nice as ever.
In addition to people in love there is a huge sex industry in Indonesia and not just for tourists. The money involved is immense. Police will be bribed to look away. It will just add to endemic corruption and will solve nothing.
But how can it be enforced. If its anything like the adultery laws as practiced in Ache it will have to be witnessed. Practically it is unlikely to happen. However, I suppose folks staying in a hotel etc could be asked to show their documentation.
I cannot believe they are going to put a law through banning sex outside marriage and making it a criminal offence subject to a year in jail. Did they not learn from the last time they tried it. Tourism will be killed. Also how they would enforce it I do not know.
