Gili bound boat sinks off Amed

Always astonished at the sheeple that see there is a problem with something like this - water leaking into the boat at the dock, no life vests, massive overcrowding, etc. but they still just climb right in... Darwin in action?

A timely reminder that many fast boat operations between Bali and Lombok Gilis are risky. Yesterday a Marina Srikandi fast boat sunk with 32 passengers aboard shortly after leaving Amed in Bali going to Gili T. The skipper said they were aware of a leak in the rear bilge but thought they would be OK. Shortly after leaving the vessel rapidly took on water and started to sink and then was overturned by a wave. Very fortunately all 32 aboard are ok, although I'm sure quite traumatised.

Markit you are a 100% right but a lot of the passengers have booked in Kuta Sanur Ubud and only see the boat when they arrive by (transport provided the agent) at the dock. In all cases you would have paid up front so thinking is not that clear if you refuse to get on the boat you keep your life and lost the money then how to get back to your hotel Amed is a little remote. The other factor in this is it will not happen to me. On the UC forum someone mentioned and inflatable dingy on the beach where the passengers came ashore but most photos miss this out and print survivors and debris only.

I seem to remember reading few days ago that the boat Amed-Gili has been operating illegally for quite a while, as far as the Bali authorities are concerned. The boat is registered in Lombok to avoid paying taxes in Bali. Did I read correctly?
