I live in what many consider to be "paradise" and watch daily events around the world where it appears several religious and racial wars have been declared without actually telling anyone and wonder why I feel so safe living in a multi-cultural, highly religious country? Am I deluded?

And I wasn't having a dig, by the way. For sure I think that the chances of something nasty happening in say, Karangasem like where you are from or the backwater 30K population town I'm from is buckley's to none. But I wouldn't discount something happening in the larger centres. Certainly while the parasitic Gilimanuk cops are more worried about fleecing a few rupe's from some poor hooker or the odd expat's dog (in a place that has rabies anyway) than actually performing their job's nothing would surprise me. Border security at it best. Post 2002 the Balinese got their **** together for a while. Then they got lazy. Then 2005 happened and they got got their **** together again for a little bit longer, but then they got lazy again. Some Balinese clearly have some very short memories of the impact those bombs had beyond ground zero.

I take your point Adam and agree...however, I recently left Bali International airport and was very impressed with security. They screened ALL baggage entering the departure building...then checked all hand baggage before entering the secure gate area and this time checked us all again prior to going past the gate to the A/C....that part was new and they threw away my small non-pointed nose-hair scissors as too dangerous to carry on the plane. Crazy thing is soon after T.O. they served lunch (I was business class) and gave me a steak knife...:icon_e_surprised:

Revised what? The US meddling in the Middle East, which culminated recently with the invasion of Iraq totally destabilized the area. It inspired thousands of guys like this Tunisian to action.

Here in the US, we're doing quite well (up to now) all by ourselves, thank you: from 2005 - 2015, 71 Americans were killed in terrorist attacks on US soil, and 301.847 (yes, you read right, more than 30,000 per year!) were killed by gun violence among ourselves over the same period!
