Noticed you got blocked on a Bali Facebook page.No Idea gets banned every where. Sometimes the truth hurts and admin dictators don't like to be challenged. An expert told me you should never delete comments no matter what on a Facebook group.

Thanks for the well deserved accolades but I have to admit my behavior has been modified a bit by prolonged exposure to the fecking idiots on FB. In my experience on FB if you want to "help" someone you have to go at it with absolute kid gloves other wise they either threaten suicide and/or murder and with generally tens, if not hundreds, of like-minded (I use the term very loosely) fools offering therapy, support and meaningful yoga positions to make the horrible pain go away. In short, I may have gotten out of the habit of dealing with adults. What I'm not yet clear on is why the FB environment is so addictive? I open it to catch some messages or stuff from real life friends and suddenly 3 hours have gone by without beer!!! Don't worry "Evil Markit" is still around but you all have tamed down considerably too now haven't you? Can't remember the last time some fool came on asking for the best tattoo parlor or all you can eat buffet in Kuta.

I will try and give a real example. Here is some background We had a development application from Aldi supermarkets who wanted to change zoning happening in our suburb it was an in a totally inappropriate location being a quiet leafy street next door to lots of lovely houses , a small park close to a school and next door to a lively local small shopping strip. There was a facebook page opened and it quickly got over 1000 followers ,the residents had hastily convened meetings and were up in arms. The guy who stood up and became in charge of the residents committee was the IT director of a major American investment bank he was a local guy based in Sydney and the social media dept in the bank was also under him so he had good experience plus he was pretty smart. I also could log into the facebook page with admin rights Any negative comments going on to the page I deleted and blocked the people thinking I was doing the right thing. He explained to me that you need to see both sides of the argument and its good that the supporters see that and let the supporters do the responding and let the argument/discussion develop. This let the local supporters be more vocal and let the argument have two sides and the locals became more active in responding etc. It also showed Aldi that we were letting everyone have their say. Aldi on the other hand would not let this on their facebook page so we looked good and they looked like the Evil German Invaders. EXAMPLE NO 2 - When Markit was making a valid point on a certain Bali facebook page he appeared unsympathetic but it made sense to me and some other members and admin disagreed at his directness. They threatened to ban him which looked petty to me and probably most others. He kept asking why so he was banned this looks bad to other readers and members as everyone is entitled to their view . So you you just let it go and let the thread develop and move on A long response which I hope makes sense oh and the locals won no development ,the council and the local government were scared by the locals response.

I remember Eastern rd, Turramurra and Parkers but the visuals that I conjure up can't for one minute fit with an Aldis fitting into that landscape. My memory bank however may be somewhat over-drawn now days. :)

Thanks for the explanation. For some reason I read it as "you should never delete your own comments in a facebook group". I understand what you are saying, but if you have ever been a moderator of an expat facebook group or forum, I think you will realize that sometimes you do need to ban certain people and delete some posts. I have seen popular forums have to close down from the comments of just a couple of people. Defamation laws here and in some other countries like Thailand are very weird and plenty of people have had to go to jail for public comments.

Back in the dark ages when the likes of Aldi and Lidl were just getting going in Duschland all the upper classes were totally scathing of them. Then after a little while and hearing from their cleaners and housemaids what good products they have (used to restrict themselves to only 650 products, but made damned sure they were the best and cheapest) you'd see the Mercs and Beamers in the Aldi parking lot with the upperclasses moving their shopping from the Aldi's bags into the Harrods bags and then into the trunks. It's gotten so good now that when an Aldi or Lidl builds a new location in the UK house prices go up accordingly. So as usual Oz is way behind the times. Welcome to the 1980s Turramurra! Place sounds like a stomach condition anyway.

On the other hand if you go to hard on the moderating the fun disappears. Classic example is the facebook Bali Expats page. That used to be good fun until the Admin tightened the moderation screws and it's like a graveyard now.

Can't agree with this - I just started a thread that lasted 2 days, got 2 death threats and 4 proposals of marriage. Moderation in moderation? Moderate maybe but banning and censorship should be THE last resort. A moderator is but a censor. What do we think (I know what I think) about censorship in a public forum as opposed to a 'members' forum. All great dictators and despots start with censorship. Corporations, Governments, Religions. **** THAT! **** 'EM ALL!!!! SOMEONE DOESN'T LIKE WHAT SOMEONE SAYS JUST DON'T ****IN' READ OR RESPOND UNLESS YOU ARE UP FOR SOME ARGIE BARGY. ****IN' IGNORE THEM OR BLANK THEM BUT IF YOU WANT TO BUY INTO THEIR GAME DON'T WHINGE WHEN IT GETS ROUGH. The residents,council and state government also couldn't visualize it ,especially the roof car park. The council rejected 12 -0 In NSW now the council decision means little . Aldi as they are allowed to do took it further ,then the State planning committee killed it real quick. It helped the cause that the ex premier lived on the road and the local MPs maiden speech 6 months before was about local neighborhood shopping strips. It also didn't do any harm that it made the Ch9 news and Daily Telegraph due to residents having some great contacts in the media. The premier and planning minister were inundated with letters emails etc

"Place sounds like a stomach condition anyway." :icon_e_biggrin: 'turramurra' is in fact an Aboriginal word meaning "big hill" or "high hill". The area was originally named Eastern Road until the railway made it there in 1890 and was renamed. The Terrmerragal (Turramurragal) people lived there but white 'fella' disease and murder reduced numbers significantly. If ya like that one Markit then try some of these neighbouring 'suburban' names. Wahroonga (where I spent my formative years), Waitara, Ku-ring-gai and......Saint Ives.

Probably in two weeks but just for a couple of nights and then after that maybe a week later for a longer visit. Did a spur of the moment ride to Candi Dasa yesterday afternoon with a mate for a beer. Traffic was nuts but I got back home (after a couple of rain stops) just in time to watch the F1 G.P. Exhillerating ride, long way for a beer though. :icon_wink:

Markit the official reason people objected was the location was inappropriate, the real reasons were varied mainly it was that their house prices would go down (and they would have gone down) The other main reason was the local business panicked that they would loose a and maybe be forced to close. Maybe just maybe this is" welcome to the future "where the suburbs stay local and village type.

The best m'bike ride from Ubud to Candi area, for the ride of it, is just head north from Ubud past Tegelalang (sp? the rice paddies) keep going up/north and and then go right somewhere towards Besakih then just go straight past toward us. Escapes the traffic and is with some spectacular views, grand curves and Bali, Bali, Bali.
