Bring through customs?

We are planning to move to Bali for a year. We have a huge pile of stuff we would like to bring, and I just read that there is a limit of $250 (US) personal items. Since I was hoping to bring my stereo kit (we are allowed the weight in baggage) now I am wondering if they will let us through customs, since it may be obvious that it is valued at more than $250. We will be on a tourist visa, not a working visa. We also wanted to bring a few (well, more than a few) CDs, and some of our toiletries for several months. Anyway, it's lots of stuff although still under the 300 lbs weight that EVA Airlines allows for us. Anyone know how customs deals with lots of bags? Heavy bags? Oh yeah - can you bring wine in? If for only a year I wouldn't bother, CD on hard disc as you have to declare them. The rest would be cheaper and hassle free.

I believe the duty free allowance on alcohol is 1 liter by liquid volume per person (regardless of alcohol %). After that there would be duty, but as in many things in Indonesia, there is little transparency on what the duties might be (anecdotally I have heard it is supposed to be based on 'price' and not on alcohol content) and I guess it would be up to how much of a bung the on duty customs officer feels like demanding. Having said that, I have read reports on this site where people have brought in excess booze either undetected or were allowed in along with their excess with a wink and a smile, so good luck.

I have brought in over my limit on a few occasions and have paid the coffee money but one night a few years ago i think the coffee money was for all the airport i left the bottle and never tried since.

We came in last week with 13 (!!) boxes, and they "inspected" us -- they opened a couple boxes, and the boxes inside of the boxes. I wish we had brought in more wine (for our own consumption). - Bill & Emily
