Early days...the Mayor of Surabaya (Tri Rismaharini) may run for Governor of Jakarta next election.....if persuaded. Imagine Jakarta being alcohol-free....next comes Bali?

Any government anywhere can designate 'alcoholic beverages' as a class A,B,C,etc prohibited substance thereby leaving cough syrups alone. Prohibition in Indo' simply won't work. Too many rich dudes enjoy their tipple. FFS there is still a large market in Bali, e.g., for class A substances that carry a penalty of death and plenty of knuckleheads who want to dabble in the trafficking, distribution, selling and partaking. Busted for drinking alcohol? See my above Chicken little post. When I was spending a lot of time in places like Dubai, Bahrain and Qatar, booze was easy to get. You just needed not to walk around sh1t faced and alert the world that you were.

Booze was easy to get in Bahrain because it was allowed in the hotels. Often sheiks from Dhahran would drive across from Saudi and get pie-faced in the Bahrain hotels and drive back...except some went over the side of the causeway on the way home....:icon_e_surprised: Most middle-east expat compounds had stills running making some brews.....we used to fly-in the yeast, fruit juice for wine, etc. just to get invited. As you say, so long as the expats didn't alert anyone, it was OK.

Manama in Bahrain even had a discreet bottle shop tucked away. I would see the Saudi blokes every Thursday and Friday nights in their dish dash at the bar flashing bling, drinking high end liquor and surrounded by ostentatious 'companions' from the country formerly known as USSR. As you say davita, that bridge was gridlock with blokes returning home with the expectation of what goes on away, stays away. I even had access to black market booze in Saudi but I thought that was just a 'bridge too far'. The fresh orange juice was cheaper and less problematic.

The second-largest city in Indonesia, Surabaya, has approved a bylaw that bans the production, distribution and consumption of alcoholic beverages. “If in three months [Governor] Soekarwo does not respond to this bylaw, it would be enacted directly in Surabaya. The bylaw does not contradict to any regulation because we have consulted the Home Ministry,” Armuji, speaker of the Surabaya Legislative Council, said on Friday. According to the bylaw, punishments would include the issuance of warning letters, administration fines, temporary closure of businesses, revocation of business licenses and the shutting down of businesses. “Offenders would also face three months imprisonment or pay a fine of Rp 50 million. The bylaw covers any kind of alcoholic beverage, such as beer or others with more than 10 percent alcohol, including traditional beverages and mixed alcoholic beverages [oplosan],” Armuji said. The "zero" part is notional - I think there's a touch of alcohol in it. (Who drinks that anyway?) How about medicines that have some alcohol in them? Cooking alcohol (like mirin)? No Indonesian beers have more than about 4.7% (unless somebody drops some arak in it). Hopefully, this is just another brain-fart from a cerebrally-challenged individual (unfortunately, one of many lately). A suitable case for concern, ridicule and derision. You have to wonder about the reactions from the alcohol producers. Where are they? Why are they so silent? Not sure about Surabaya, but Balinese will ignore this "bylaw", as it's done in the past. Same as the "fallic law" [[I]sic[/I]] couple of years ago. (Phallic wooden bottle openers, naked Balinese beauties in paintings, erotic Hindu temple carvings...) I just went to a [I]Circle K[/I] in Sanur to use its ATM and noticed that the fridge had lots of Bintang, Anker, Hennekin, etc, in it. That was "illegal" not long ago. Back to business as usual now.
