Post #2 Yes, of the sky! And it was Co-ey Skiles, not Agent Muldar. My question is how the heck did they hit the birds - especially in the [U]second[/U] engine. They must have been distracted in the cockpit. Shockingly bad flying, IMHO. The film, of course, I'll bet, won't address that issue.

Must be if you cannot spell the guys name. The A/C hit a flock of Canada geese 2 mins after take off at 4.5 miles from the end of R/W 04 and climbing at around 200 knots thru' 2800 ft The NTSB concluded its investigation on May 4, 2010. It determined the probable cause of the accident to be "the ingestion of large birds into each engine, which resulted in an almost total loss of thrust in both engines".

Here's one showing 1549 <I><s>[I]</s>climbing into<e>[/I]</e></I> the flock. Probably could have powered back, dropped height and gone under the birds. Post #6 Fair enough, but I recall seeing a very elaborate presentation not too long after the incident that included the radio calls and that presentation showed 2 separate hits. That's why I mentioned the second engine separately. But it makes sense to cop the geese into both at 'the same time', especially if you were headed right into the flock. Also, the birds were shown a distance away before any impact. I know bird strikes do happen real quick but they saw the birds before impact, the presentation reported. Auto-Pilot OFF, hard left or right turn and maybe dive below the normal ALT those birds fly at. Why didn't they do that? I will try to find that animation, hoping it hasn't been pulled by now. The ditching was superb though. 10/10 for that part.

Post #9 You won't get much glide distance from a 3/4-loaded A320 from 2900 ft. Or any other heavy. A much lighter ACFT just might get 3NM, winds permitting. I agree the chosen touchdown point was a sensible choice. Let's wait and see Tom Hanks pull that one off!

Just noticed that Sully was a glider ace when at the USAF academy...probably helped in his approach to the river without power. Not sure if Tom Hanks is so qualified but he did jump into a volcano only to be hurled out as it erupted...so I guess he's also familiar with flying without any engines....:icon_e_surprised:

Thanks for the links...very interesting.....you're right....easy to say....anyway that was animation. 'Climb Set' was probably referring to Climb Thrust on the engines....I never heard of the auto-pilot being engaged and the Capt. did say "I have control" and didn't mention auto disengaged....so I suggest they were still in manual flight control. 200 knots (230mph) is just under 4 miles every minute or about 1 mile every 15 seconds. A flock of geese would hardly register in peripheral vision long enough to do anything....never mind an A/C like an A320 being able to maneuver at that speed to dodge. Interesting is how area radar didn't see them either...a flock of Canada geese, flying in formation, would surely ping radar like an aircraft would. NTSB also did simulation tests to see if they could have glided to land at LaGuardia or New Jersey airports and, while the test-pilots were aware of the test, they crashed 8 times out of 15 attempts.

Off to the side ... had a 'Lasses Neet Oot' last night and watched a superb HD version of 'Jason Bourne'. A lot rougher than the previous flicks with 'Wor Damon' looking like he has been through the mincer, very realistic, but even when beaten like a tattie on Sunday, he still looks lush when he gets his kit off.
