All this reminds me that when our notorious if not infamous Senator Pauline Hanson first entered the Australian parliament she devoted her maiden speech to warning that the Chinese were taking over Australia and the Aborigines were getting extra assistance and that wasn't fair. (Never mind the Aborigines have long been the most disadvantaged ethnic group in the country.) Ms Hanson continued with her tirades against migrants and at one stage she said she was so fed up with all the migrants coming into the country she was going to live in London. Then she changed her mind. Maybe someone pointed out that London has perhaps the largest percentage of migrants than almost any other country in the world. I wonder if there are other interplanetary creatures out there scratching their heads and wondering what is wrong with us.

Marc Boulet, a French writer and journalist, spent, ILLEGALLY, 3 years in China, 1985, and 1986 – 87, pausing as a Chinese (He surely does not look the part at all!), from some ethnic minority group from West China. He wrote a book recalling his unique experience, called “Dans la peau d’un Chinois” (In a Chinaman’s skin), editions Bernard Barrault, 1988, which describes life as it was in China, in those days. Unfortunately, this book has yet to be translated into English. From the short comments of tel522 and of dav733, it looks like things in China haven’t changed much since Boulet’s first visit in that country!

How would a non-French speaker know this? Can't understand your point.

A similar story of infiltrating a diiferent culture is a book called "black like me" where the white author disguised himself as a black man and reported his experiences in the deep south of north america, not known for its tolerance of racial diversity. It is a fascinating read.

Can't understand your point either. Many English-speaking people ALSO speak French as a second language. My remark was simply that because the book has never been translated into English, its distribution worldwide has been somewhat limited.

Then why use such a limited reference? It might also be good to note that many Chinese find the term "Chinaman" derogatory.

Limited reference? There is only one Marc Boulet and his experience is unique (and not only in China). As for the term Chinaman, in Chinese language, the term "Chinese" is literally said as chinaman (中國人).:p:p:p

Head scratch? This is neither a French or Chinese speaking forum is it? Ask an ethnic Chinese person where you are from in Boston if they are offended by being referred to as a "Chinaman"? Your references are as currently acceptable as your current knowledge of Bali.

I surely did not start this string, which was first about Chinese in Bali, and then went on about some people 's experiences with Chinese people. But nobody forces you to read this string about Chinese. As for my current knowledge of Bali, don't worry about it, I've been involved with/in Bali probably longer that you have been on this earth!
