Is the water that comes from the taps treated? Where are the dams that supply the water? Where if any are the treatment plants? If so is that for all areas of Bali? Does it also have fluoride? Do you guys drink the tap water ? Given the amount of tourists and lack of rain this year is there ever any shortage or predicted shortage?

iv used the unilever pure it system for the last 2 years works fine , pdam in the top tank clean water out the bottom , no more aqua gallon

Absolutely and still being ignored by authorities. There are mansions on the Bukit that only get water when it's trucked to them. I've extended my bore by 10 metres in the last 4 years to ensure supply but, given the demand by lots of construction, using the same water table, I doubt if that supply can be assured. No-one here seems to understand this future dilemma till it will be too late...Balinese think 'the gods' will provide water and electricity...

So this Govt dept PDAM where do they get the water from ? Do they have reservoirs or is it bore and do they then pipe it to your property or do they use trucks and fill your tank? Also a bit confused about not drinking it from tap as months ago a semi regular on here said on another forum that its all treated and OK to drink from tap. I already had been told its not from another expat and now Spicyayam has said no.

Some lakes maybe Where if any are the treatment plants? - none that I am aware of If so is that for all areas of Bali? - I think most people get it from their own well/bore, or PDAM which is government water dept, but water is just pumped from the ground Does it also have fluoride? no Do you guys drink the tap water ? - no. Interesting the timing of this post, as I just saw someone writing this on FB: https://www.kopernik.ngo So from the post on FB it seems you can use ordinary water from the tap, run it through the filter and then it is drinkable. If so, then that would be fantastic and would save a bit of money from having to buy the Aqua gallons.

Here's a link to a feature report in Bali Advertiser a couple of years ago which spells out the Bali water potential...and no-one has done much since then. Where I live in Surabaya the area has its own treatment works and they say you can drink it. In bali you need good hospital cover if you want to drink the water, I think all the water comes from the Lakes, rivers.

Some of PDAM water comes from their own bores but, much like my own well-water, I would never drink it. I had planned a whole house filtration unit as even the shower water is hard but, due to unforseen medical expenses, that project is on hold. In any event I never envisaged drinking the water as Aqua bottles are inexpensive and convenient to use in our water-cooler machine which produces chilled/normal/hot water. We also use Aqua water for ice cubes...wouldn't want anyone to get Bali-Belly from our Mojitos...

I have been thinking of installing the Yuki water filters, my neighbour across the road use them and was very happy, his fish are healthy:icon_eek:

The person I was talking about on another forum{tripadvisor) was No.Idea He is usually pretty cluey and spot on and someone whom I respect and this is what he wrote "I have been drinking the tap water here for years. Will this ridiculous out dated story ever be put to rest? The scheme water here is treated." So who actually drinks the tap water? and what does Scheme water mean?

davita wrotehahaha...good advice but for 2 months I've not had any alcohol except to cleanse my belly scar after surgery, and not forecast to be able to drink alcohol until my chemo-therapy expires in, possibly, 5 more months.......I drink Aqua water and tea....:grumpy: I also recall that French water was so bad they drank wine instead as it was well fermented by the good bacteria. I wonder if my doctor will buy that story. I'll ask him tomorrow if I can imbibe Hatten's red as I heard the Hatten Company is suffering and may go bankrupt, due to lack of sales, since I went to hospital.

Didnt realise you were on chemo . hope you get better

Interesting. I watched a BBC program a while back about Victorian Britain and it said had it not been for the amount of ale consumed water borne diseases would have been much worse as beer ingredients kill some bacteria's. Maybe you will be ok .

I have 2 wells that go all the way down to 5 meters where the hole started to collapse faster than they could dig. This water is from the same ground water that feeds the rice fields and probably comes from the river next the house. Not even the locals drink it, why I don't know - it looks clear and smells fine but they won't. I buy Aqua for the house and to drink but got fed up with that always being "out" so went along with my guy's idea to drink the water that all the locals drink which comes from a local spring coming up in the middle of the rice fields about 1km away. Good water, no problems and would carry on but all visitors the minute they hear "spring water" start turning green. Back to fecking Aqua. Have a mate living nearby (4 years) that won't even brush his teeth with the tap water - bit fecking extreme that? Bloody Ozzy!

I read a couple of weeks ago pdam now has a 50% deficit in supply for south bali, which I can only see getting worse , if this continues bali may as well shut the lights out , and forget about tourism.

One of the most serious pollutant of the well water in Bali is the run-offs of the pesticides and fertilizers used in the rice fields. Since the ground layer over the bedrock is rather thin in most places, of the order of 10 - 20 meters, it cannot filter out these pollutants, and commercial filters cannot do the job either. However, most wells stop at the depth of the rocky layer. The solution is obviously to drill through the first rocky layer, at depth of hundreds of meters, but obviously it can be p[FONT=Verdana]rohibitively [/FONT]expensive.

This is an old thread with similar discussion: https://balipod.com/forum/threads/do-the-indos-go-this-far-with-food-prep.9964/ In that thread the problem was brought up about the problem with nitrates in the water. You can Google for more info such as this article: Nitrate Nitrite Nitrogen in Surfacewater and Drinking Water Unless the filter system can remove nitrates to a safe level, it would seem these filter systems are not recommended, especially for kids/pregnant women and older people.

The only sensible answer is to only drink beer or juice and boil the tap/well water.
