oil is oil. more expensive oil has better additives..if you change your oil every month ??
Not all oils are oil...most nowadays are synthetics....
What is the purpose of engine oil? | Mobil 1â„¢
Manufacturers are more knowledgeable about what type and rotation of oil their machines need.
All rotating engines need lubrication, heat dissipation and particle removal and, depending on the purpose of the engine the type of oils used will differ...i.e. diesel engines require sudsy oil to remove sludge as the internal tolerances are less than.....say.....a racing car engine, which would need rapid heat absorption.
Even motorcycles, depending on their power, will require different oils to match their performance...the engine maker's manual is the best source for advice.
The worst wear an engine suffers is on start-up, especially if it hasn't been run for a while, as the oil will drip slowly from the rotating parts leaving them exposed.
To avoid this some engine manufacturers provide an automatic lubrication pump to flood the bearings before start-up. In cold climates they provide sump heaters to keep the oil more viscous for start-up.
