Most of it gets recycled - only about 10% can't be used again and is then dealt with as is all other garbage and ends up in the landfill.

Upon some further reflection, I wonder how big of an issue this really is with Indonesian immigration - volunteering/working in Bali without a Kitas? The Italian guy seemed screwed from the off because he was an overstayer and maybe he wasn't polite (or contrite) enough so they just threw the rest of the charges in for good measure. After all, not only have the trash heroes not been confronted by immigration (despite many well publicized events), but the 10 or so co-working spaces (Hubud, et al) haven't been raided either as far as I know - and these places are chockablock full of people on voa's and sosbud's beavering away on this or that project, nearly all designed to or actually generating economic value, in other words, working in Indonesia.

Not to put [I]too[/I] negative spin on this, but maybe the nearest river (if there’s any water in it), or any plot of land that has a sign saying don’t dump rubbish here, or burn it somewhere. And if there is an actual garbage removal crew, maybe to the garbage dump in Suwung or equivalent.

I'm not sure what other's pay, but we pay Rp. 20.000 per month for garbage collection. I'd wager that there isn't a single household in the whole of Bali that couldn't afford that.

We have a normal size garbage bin in front of our kos,apparently it gets collected but mostly it gets carried 5 metres and thrown on the ground,our balinese neighbour puts a match to the mostly plastic rubbish every so often

Yes I used to pay 25,000 for pick up ,and they took it a about a kilometer down the street where there is a mountain of garbage and dumped it there,

It seems like my neighbour cannot afford it..............., but he has a small villa on the back of his house even with a swimming pool and on the back of the villa he burn the rubbish and many plastic bags and the smoke comes straight to our house, I can see him from the window. I get mad on this. Maybe time to move this to its own topic! Rubbish problems in Bali.

You can move it anywhere you like but one things for sure the garbage won`t go away,and nothing will ever change, Aljazeera has a documentary about it, and according to the Balinese people who were interviewed its us foreigners who are to blame,

When I had house in Renon, I was the only one on my street who paid to have my garbage taken away,everyone else just emptied it onto the street ,some would burn it, we were either choked by stinking smoke or over run with rats,however having it taken away was also a problem,we had to place it outside the gates on a concrete slab specifically for the garbage,i couldn't understand why my wife only used plastic bags for the garbage,because every morning when I go out the bags had been ripped open and scattered all over the place,first I thought dogs but that wasn't possible by the way the bags had been opened,i had the bright idea of buying some proper garbage containers with lids,put them out filled with bags of garbage,next morning went out and sure enough the bags were all ripped open,garbage all over the street and the garbage cans were gone,my wife told me what did you expect,they stole the garbage bins to sell them ,just tried to be somewhat respectable and considerate but you just cant win, It makes me wonder why Al Gore and all his buddies who are so concerned about the environment come to bali to hold meetings on the subject,do they ever look out the windows of the aircraft while flying over and see the smoke rising from everywhere,
