Danger - forum?

Taking part, as one does, in various forum (fori?) mainly concerned with Indonesia and it's culture it is being slowly and carefully suggested in some that it might be dangerous openly discussing aggravating issues such as sex, drugs or religion. As this "right" is hardly considered by most of us from the west I would be interested to hear how many people here agree or disagree?

Years ago under a previous administration of this site there seemed to appear a possible mole. In this case one member had knowledge concerning certain applications of Indonesian law that far exceeded what the rest of us peons had. The person also had a fair command of English to the extent that it became rather apparent that only someone with this capability had to be part of the mechanics of our governing body. In fact it became so blatantly obvious that the member fast faded from the scene. This person was a valuable asset while he/she lasted, but made one wonder what the motivation could be in belonging to the site? You don't have read up on George Orwell to figure out what is going on and never doubt it.

Because most of us live in a country where the standards "we grew up with" are not protected in law and the exercising of which [U][I]could[/I][/U] leave each of us open to prosecution. "When in Rome, do as the Romans"? Edit: It should also be part of this question to ask about our anonymity here? Management in a "worst case" scenario (police banging on your door) how can we be protected? Should you/we institute a new log on where even you don't know our real identities? That would be my choice...

I don't think there is any anonymity on the web and I am not sure exactly what you want and whether what you want will serve the need of what you want to achieve. Feel free to send me a PM if you have any kind of request.

Since there's only about 20 people that contribute here on a regular basis why don't you send all 20 each a choice of 5 new identities and let them/us choose which ever we want to use. Then destroy our old IDs completely. I'm thinking that those that wanted to take advantage of the "stunning new you" could and you would "officially" not know which or who anyone was. Of course within about 2 days we would all pretty much know who was who again but you (admin) would have complete deniability and no records to show any nosy pols. I'm sure there's holes aplenty in my logic but I'm sure you get the drift and can suggest ways around it/them...?

During that previous administration, one member was also raided by police because of comments made about smoking marijuana, so yes, it pays to be circumspect when posting on a public forum, especially in Indonesia.

But if the old id's were destroyed, would that mean destroying the old posts? Because some of us who still live OS regularly trawl through them to pick up hints. Not admitting to being a stalker or anything, but i've even made a couple of notes in my notebook about Bali, of the names of a few people on here who have built a house - because I like to re read posts on the subject! Is there any way old posts can be kept archived without the id? That being said, i fully understand why there is a need for caution about privacy on here. I nearly had a heart attack reading a few posts on Facebook in a certain group that I hang out in a lot. Someone was asking (with what looked like their real name) were there any good gay hangouts in Ubud? Mentioning a place they had heard of. And a couple of people responded with auggestions. I felt so worried for this person I nearly PM'd them to warn them and in the end didn't do so for fear they would react defensively. I honestly think some people are too innocent for their own good. We take for granted our freedoms in a place like Australia.

A private forum would defeat the whole purpose of the forum to spread the information about living in Bali. Or how do you imagine it to work?

Lucky for me, I would never even consider doing anything illegal, but theoretically if I ever did, I would be smart enough never to implicate myself by posting it on a public forum.

Well, Admin could move the whole thin to some 'net neutral' country like Iceland which welcomed Wickilinks. But on the other hand, the Bolivian embassy is probably a bit overcrowded these days

Thing about laws is they can change from day to day. What was legal yesterday, isn't today or you may not know what you have posted was libelous or defamatory. Who knows, some of your many posted picture/memes might be copyright protected!? How do any of us know that what we post isn't upsetting someone in government? Talk about religion/politics/property/money/visas/marriage/rights/gays all have been discussed at length and depth here, as they should be, but not everyone is happy about that openness if you follow Indonesian politics at all, you will know.
