Markit Having been at several Hindu ceremonies where all and sundry (regardless of youth) were gambling away the family silver/gold/cows/land I just wondered what the actual laws here are governing the pass-time? It also seems to take place outside of any ceremony as I've seen guys (who almost anyone else would describe as "shifty") set up a game just beside the road and wait for all the children to come running up with there hot little hands full of rupiah and proceed, to general hilarity, to relieve the kids of their dosh post-haste. Any info on gambling law/regs/accepted usage in Indonesia would be appreciated.
mrsgabry As far as I now gambling for money is prohibited. But also cockfighting in general is prohibited (I think there are special rare occasions where it is allowed) but still happening all the time with police happily taking part.
spicyayam Gambling is illegal in Indonesia, as well as online gambling. I think they get away with it cock-fighting by claiming it is part of the culture. The Gambling Man's Favourite Sport Balinese Cockfighting By Skye Laphroaig - Bali Advertiser
Markit I'm wondering if the gambling I see all over at ceremonies and sometime on street corners is largely using the same legal pretense as the cock-fighting which is supposedly only allowed in combination with some Hindu festivals/ceremonies? Does anyone know the legal underpinning for this? (come on Spicy your missus is Lawyer?)
