Indihome 20MB connection and tv

So we just got Indihome installed yesterday. It's the 20MB service. Comes together with phone line and a bunch of television channels. Only had to pay for a LAN cable to reach our television. We had to change our telephone number, but that was the only downside. Cost is just over 700K a month. 50MB available for 1.5 million.

Thanks for the info SpicyAyam. Can I ask a favour? Could you repeat the speedtest again but point it towards a server location in Sydney or Melbourne, Australia? This would give me a good idea how it'll perform for some of the functions I require. e.g. VOIP, FTP file uploads, Remote Desktop.

Ha ha! Suffer in ya jocks, Markit. I've even stopped buying DVDs as Smartfren give you an extra 12GB you can use between 2am to 8am. Just setup utorrent to automatically start and stop between those hours.

I'm not sure where you're getting the 14 seconds from but the ping in SpicyAyam's speedtest result is 43 milliseconds, which is a good result for VOIP . . . if you want to call Kuta. I'd like to know what the ping result is between here and Australia because that's where I call the most. I'd be perfectly happy using the mobile Smartfren network for everything if it was more reliable. It basically becomes worse than dial-up in stormy weather. Here's my speedtest results: [ATTACH]2645.vB[/ATTACH] VOIP works well (even on 300ms), Skype works well, Remote Desktop and web browsing are fine but FTP uploading is a bit of a pain for large files. About 50% of the time, files larger than about 20Mb will freeze mid-upload. I use 7-zip to split them up into 10Mb chunks to get around the problem.

We only have 10 Mbit Indihome, but here is a speedtest to Telstra in Sydney. The main thing that changes in the ping. Downloads are still close to 10.

Did you change the speedtest to use a server in Sydney, Australia? If not, you're not comparing apples with apples.

Oh right. If you say something is going to eat something else, doesn't it usually imply a bad result? A ping result over 300ms will usually result in too long of a delay for comfortable VOIP conversations, that's why it's important to me.

Yep, that's my experience too. Takes a bit of getting used to. I'm hoping the Indihome fibre-to-the-home will cut down this ping time significantly and be reliable 24/7.

Many thanks to RonB and SpicyAyam. It looks like the ping time is only marginally better using Indihome fibre, meaning that there will still be a noticeable delay using VOIP. What do you guys think about it's reliability? Have you had many dropouts or severe slow downs? Does the router need to be turned on and off sometimes?

Not sure if that will slow things down, but it does go through the router also. I am sure occasionally you would need to restart it and I am sure it will generate some heat. It has only been a few years since we were using a radio antennae which was more than 1 million a month and I guess we were getting less than 1 mb download, with lots of outages. I don't think you can complain too much about the progress being made.

Ah, you beat me to the punch. That ping speed of 200ms is pretty impressive, who do you use for your internet?

Yes, but you'll never get 39ms for web traffic to Australia, other locations sure, but not Australia. The 200ms you just got is the best I've seen for web traffic to Australia. It's not even about geographic distance, I think I read somewhere that most, if not all, traffic to Australia from Indonesia is rerouted via Japan or America. Indonesian ISPs buy bandwidth from the undersea cables that go via Japan/America because the cables that go directly to Australia are more expensive (or possibly don't exist, I don't know). Don't quote me on this though.

Just to make sure we're talking about the same site. Here's the URL: http://www.speedtest.net/ Instead of clicking 'Begin Test' click the minus symbol on the left hand side to zoom the map out and then use the mouse the position of the map until it's over Australia. Hover your mouse over the white dot that would be Sydney and then choose a server from the list. I think a lot of people make that mistake of accepting the test results at face value without thinking about the location of the test server. Think of it this way. You wouldn't test the speed and reliability of the postal service from here to Sydney, Australia by sending a letter to Surabaya. You need to pick a server location that is representative of the where the majority of your web traffic originates.

My 15 y/o son has been reading this thread and his quote " these guys haven't a clue, no idea at all, don't know what they are taking about. He's laughing and asking are these guys old ( anything 40 and above is old) The speeds they are talking about they don't understand what's low and what's high speed. They are getting mixed up between megabytes and megabits. There are a couple of people who understand but others are confused. A lower ms is better. I also don't understand Any questions he will answer through me
