dear, all
iam nyoman, balinese chef with more than 10 years working experiences overseas.
i have been settled in bali since 2009 after working in australia. iam now still working as chef for 1 of the best world restaurant's franchise in bali. i earn about rp.15.000.000 / month ( take home pay )
i start thinking to have my own restaurant or cafe in the future. and i have a great concept for that. ( a sport bar and cafe ) which is more for local teen and youngster to chill and hangout. in a positive way. ( a place to play pooltable, a place to watch soccer match etc )
but financial wise is my biggest challenge. and i hope to find a great bussines partner with fund.
i would then just focus working for my own restaurant.
make profit from it and make a living from it.
i prefer a partner who also like to invest in the property itself ( not renting )
if anyone read this posting and interested, please email me at

If I was you, I would keep the job. You have a good salary and you can go home at night without the worry of how you are going to pay your staff/rent/electric bill.

Not to give advice to someone that wants to open a cafe, But lots of people think that tourism is were the money is. Susan you do know that there are more millionaires(AUD) in Indonesia then population in Australia. I have a shopping centre just up the road that is under redevelopment, its having 3 high-rise towers & 2 world class hotels built as well, the centre will have more then 2000 shops, the plaza in town is having redevelopment as well. Lots of money benign spent, There are 3 sports bar close by that are for local and are full, can't say the same about the expat bar.

Hi Cheftri, sounds like a fun plan, and welcome to the forum.
I wonder how much money local teens and young people have to spend at a cafe or "hangout"? Are they a group of society that has a lot of money to spend on food and drink?
Would they be a good customer base to make money from do you think?
I'm not suggesting that I know more than you do about restaurants, but I wonder if these young people would have enough money to spend at your restaurant. If not, then how would you pay your rent, wages, taxes, dll? Would you attract Laskar Bali or Baladika and if so, how much would you have to pay them?
In Australia whenever someone tries to open a restaurant everyone always advises them to do their " market research " or finding out how many people might come to your place, how much money they might spend there, how long might they visit for, if there is any similar cafe nearby, and if there is not, then why not? All those many things to think about.
I'm sure as time goes on, more forum members will log in and those with hospitality experience will offer further suggestions about planning.
Good luck with your business!

paulseawind,
Nyoman said he is an experienced chef.
He said:
" i earn about rp.15.000.000 / month ( take home pay )
From that salary, and the fact that he's worked extensively OS, I think it's fair to assume he cooks high quality food and knows about cleanliness, give the guy some credit for getting where he is, would be my suggestion.
He's just asking about business opportunities and finance now which is another issue.

Fred2 you don't live in Bali. In my recent travels around the archipelago (buncha feckin islands) I've found that the level of competition on the rest aint what they are on Bali.
Locals opening a Pop Mie shop (Alpha mart/Indo maret/ Ma and PaWarung/etc basically all selling the same crap) only need about 100k/day to live on elsewhere but on Bali there is competition from foreign run shops and life is a whole lot harder for locals (hence the Immi interest?) and the price of living is higher too. Not to mention that the customers are choosier too.
What I mean is that you see things opening up elsewhere that here(Bali) would last a week but there "will go on and on" like Titanic.

Where is a Rangi pic when I need it.

I was under the impression that the restaurant was for locals????????
Setup cost less then Rp50,000,000. plus lease back streets, would that be a fair price to start a cafe for teenage locals??????
"The Napoli pizza from Super Pizza Fannie Bay and also their Fried Calamari with vegies.
The lists go on and we each have our own favourites from our travels and explorations."
The waiter tried to kill the chef because he couldn't make a good pizza , NT news.
Fred2
Lets not get started on the NT, remember there was not mall, we laugh when we Built the road to Palmerston, who was going to live that far out if town. Saturday night speedway at millner and jumping the fence at the drive-in to turn up the speakers.
Anyway Rp50,000,000 to start a local resto??????

Thanks for the feedback Fred2. Yep I'm aware that there is a lot of money in Indonesia - just was wondering whether it's with "teens and youngsters" wanting to hang out - that's what I was asking. And very much aware of the cut throat nature of the hospitality business in Bali - seems to be quite a high turnover there?
But you are right in your assumption that I know nothing about running a business in Bali and so I will not try to give Nyoman any further advice - as a highly skilled chef I'm sure he can get plenty of that from friends and colleagues etc :icon_wink:

My mate & I had a bet back in 1978, the out come was the hottest place on the map that night and Darwin was it.
Fred2
Born in 1958, flights to Bali were cheap for Qantas DWN-JKT-DPN, we used to go to the Indonesia consulate in Darwin and apply for a visa(2 weeks), but life was easier then.

I agree clean and good food but what about service marketing menu etc
I know of a few on the places you mentioned"no names". Closed down didn't it. Food was poor as well it was all about cheap $5 a plate pasta.
Heston restaurant also had food poisoning scare a few years back over 500 people norovirius.
I am absolutely no Bali expert but I wouldn't open a restaurant here, the competition is immense I passed hundreds last night just walking to where I was headed most were quiet.
Only my opinion but you need a gimmick like Char Char gril(recommended by Davita) it's got a closing roof plus about eight levels of stair type seats that face the street. I certainly wouldn't risk money here that way.
Anyhow the OP is looking for cashed up partner not advice.
Why don't you PM him

Dear, all
Thank you for your input and jumped in to this topic.
Anyway iam living in this bussines ( but finance is the issue )
For the capital of rp. 600 million and to put ROI in 3 years?
Need the profit at least rp 17 million a month?
Daily sales rp 5 million? Food cost 50 persen? Because for local market.
After rp. 75 million gross profit minus staff wadges, gas, electricity and other expenses?
Do we still make a profit?
Anyway the food price is at average rp. 50 thousand.
To make 5 million sales daily, we just need to make 100 cover a day ( lunch and dinner )
Does it make sense?
If you know jalan dewi sri area in kuta, there are similar kind like that the cafe in my mind. Its full of local teens customer.

I know nothing about running a restaurant business. From my limited experience in restaurants that cater to tourists, the most important factor of all is the TOILET !!!
If it's not spotlessly clean, no western woman will ever go back there even if you have the best food in town!! (Guys are happy with a tree!) :) :)
kiteman
And another thing!! Why is it that a few seconds after you order your meal the waitress always takes away the menu(s)??? If you forgot to order a side dish or some bread rolls you are unlikely to run after her and consequently just forget about it. If just 1 menu was left on each table the sales would probably increase by 10%.
Nydave
My question is,why when even a small group of peoplebsit down together and all place their order at the same time that everyone gets served at different times, man one time in Sanur 3 of us (adults)and my young son went to a small western owned place, placed our orders and im noy kidding here but my wife,my sister in law and my son were all finished before I even got served, why is it so difficult to serve everyone at the same time??
Fred2
Because it's the Indonesian way. Why do you get the entree after the main? Indonesian order the packet meal, they get food in any order and "1" drink. No need to see the menu again.
