As always Mark, great pix, but utterly tragic. Wonder what the Chinese will turn their collective mouths to when the last shark, bear, tiger, rhino, etc has passed through?I'm from the group "poison each and every rhino horn, shark fin and bear claw/gall bladder and tiger skin and put it back on the market". We've got more than enough people that won't be missed. Hell, doesn't even have to be deadly poison - just something that makes your dick fall off would be enough to kill that market over night.

Mark,As always, sensational pictures, absolutely wonderful.Any idea where the sharks were caught/came from? I honestly would have thought that the larger sharks would have been decimated from the waters of more populated islands like Bali and Lombok a long, long time ago. I've personally never seen a shark in many, many exploratory visits to the Pasar Ikan in Jimbaran or Muncar in Java so it's heartening to know there are (were?) still a few around. I may be wrong, but looking from your photo's (and one of the characteristics that I admire in Indonesians) at least very little or none of the shark is wasted. Personally, I have no problem with the harvest of any species be they whale or whitebait so long as the catch is sustainable and nothing is wasted. Sadly, most shark finning practices simply involve the trimming of the sharks fins then return of the shark to sea, often still alive. Disgusting practice along with many that the Chinese should be ashamed of. Thanks again, Mark. Must make a point of checking that place out one day.

Many decry it as cowardly but Mark - You might want to take you picture off the forum? You're a lovely fella but I'd rather hear what you have to say than look at you.

1) what is "liner" in respect to a moose? I thought they came with fur or is that just a clever coat?2) where do you get a 2 foot moose from?3) most sharks would have no trouble with 2 foot of anything so do you have "pussy" sharks up there?Maybe this is something only Kanaken would understand?

1. What's a liner? Dunno, I don't speak Canuck.2. Maybe baby moose swimming near the shore and looked tasty to said shark.3. I suspect dental deficiency, probably tried to gum the poor thing to death. These are Newfie's we're talking about.

"dedicated to those without a voice"... I am hoping you mean the sharks, because I don't believe in the 'ooohh, poor fishermen/women/children have no choice and are being forced to fish sharks'...By the way, from some pics (not this fragment) it looks like they sometimes use explosives ?
Markit
Mark I find the project laudable but I'm not at all clear what, if any, the alternatives for the fishermen are? As you say they effectively earn very little on each shark or manta but it's not just on those fish that they ear little but on everything they catch so how can you stop them? Their children need to eat as do ours. This is a song that's been sung on every continent on the planet from Rhinos to Eagles and still they die in their thousands so little Chinese men can get an erection or egg collectors have another prize to show. Do we pay the fishermen not to catch them? That's been tried in Europe for the last 30 years and is an absolute disaster and has meant that millions of tons of good edible fish have been simply thrown overboard. Do we ban it and put a man with a gun on each and every fisher boat to enforce the ban? That would only increase the price of the product, not stop it's sale. A the beginning of this thread I was not joking - the only way is to poison the product and release it back into the market. We all know that isn't going to happen though is it. That I do know!

Ok, shark haven and poisoning :dispirited: ?

In light of the proposed cull of major sharks in your homeland Canon old chap you might want to rethink the film project here in Indo or at least expand it to include the only "enlightened" country down here?According to some stats I've recently seen since last year there were world wide 14 deaths attributed to sharks and over 200 due to falling coconuts they aught to chop down all the coconut trees in Oz first if it's people protection they're after. BBC News - Australians protest at plans to kill sharks in Perth

Haha guess coconuts or sharks aren't a big problem in the UK?
balibule
Every month this guy goes to the local chief with a bag of cash to pay each of the fishermen who used to fish in the region of reef that he now rents. They are happy. They get to fish enough so they can feed their families, there's enough to sell some extra at the market and they paid from the activities of the dive shop. This has also resulted in these locals now effectively becoming the guardians of that reef. They protect their golden egg by stopping anyone coming from other islands with the intention to fish the reefs. Self policing through conservation.Could this happen in Indonesia?
This is happening already.

Explain please

For anyone that is still interested in this theme I found an encouraging article that the Chinese are losing their taste for shark fin soup. Unfortunately for Bali the same goes for birds nest soup too - don't think that swallows are an endangered species?
