A friend of mine was stopped at the check-in desk in Darwin from Virgin Air and refused boarding although she had a valid ticket to fly to Bali as they said she had to have either a valid return ticket or one for an onward flight. She was then marched over to the ticketing and made to buy a high priced return ticket before they would issue a boarding pass to her plane. Has anyone else heard of this? If so is it peculiar to Virgin?

What Visa was she flying on?. I'm flying back to Bali on the 11th of January with Virgin Australia. I'll be damned if they don't let me on the plane.

That is Indonesia law.It is required to have an onward, or return ticket, or a visa to enter Indonesia. Airlines will check because, if they screw up, they are responsible for the return of the passenger at their cost.

She had a no visa but wanted a VOA

But the law hasn't changed. What is different is that, at least Virgin, seems to be taking it seriously.

I came back from KL a few months ago on Malaysian and did not have any onward/return ticket, so was questioned, but I showed my Kitas.... and that was accepted.

My KITAP is checked by every check-in counter I step up to, be Perth, Singapore or Seoul.

It is bog standard practice for airlines all over the world to require a return ticket in the event that the traveler is not a citizen of or does not possess a valid residence visa for the destination country (eg a KITAP in Indonesia). As davita correctly points out, the airline bears the financial risk of having to return the passenger if he/she is denied entry because of the lack of a return ticket (which is a legal requirement for entry into most countries). Immigration typically doesn't ask to see the return ticket (although they have the right to) because they assume that the airlines have already done so.

Mark @post #9hehehe...Your post, sir, is succinct!Mine, on the other hand, seeing as markit thought the problem lay with Virgin, was attempting to be more circumspect.......whooosh! :indecisiveness:

You are all as clever as a dog with 3 ballocks but my simple point was to clear up the difference between "usage" - no onward or return ticket needed or asked for as it's been for years and "theory" as we all know and knew it to be that onward or return tickets are legally required but never asked for. Is there anyone on this forum that hasn't turned up at NR Imigrazzi without anything more than his dick in his hand(girls excepted) and a VOA and been let into the country?

You are all as clever as a dog with 3 ballocks QUOTE]Don't know about that but I was at the party......The dogs all had a party They came from near and far. Some dogs came by taxi And some dogs came by car. Each dog signed his name Upon a special book And each dog hung his asshole Upon a special hook. One dog was not invited, And this aroused his ire. He stormed into the party And loudly shouted "FIRE!" In the scene that followed, The dogs forgot to look And grabbed just any asshole From off of any hook. And that is why when dogs roam On land or sea or foam, They sniff each others' assholes, To try and find their own! :icon_lol:

I asked this question on the forum about a 2 years ago if memory serves and got the general response that it is dictated by law but usually not asked for.The only time I've been asked for an onward ticket was by Imigrasi in Jember (oh dear) during extension of a SosBud (never had any problems in Bali). Also, I've never been required to show an onward ticket during checkin abroad or at NR but I've always travelled on a Sosbud at least. But apparently some airlines are stepping up the control it seems. Perhaps we are seeing a general change in policy...
davita
The point is.......If a visa is requested at a foreign embassy/consul they want to see a return or onward ticket before issuing the visa.If the check-in at an International Airline sees a foreign passport for the destination, and knows the country of destinations policy of non-entry without a visa, they want to see the visa or other reason to enter, or, as Mark says.......a return or onward ticket. Legally the airline is responsible for passengers entering and, if you read the small print on the tickets, you might see that they will disclaim if you don't have those requirements. It is a condition of travel, when you purchase the ticket, to have all necessary visa's to enter the destination country. If you buy tickets over the internet you have to tick the box which asks if you understand those conditions. So, in fact, they are doing a favour by double checking at the check-in counter. In my experience this has been policy for over 30 years.

Davita the only ones they are "doing a favour for" is themselves when at 6 a.m. in the morning 60 minutes before your flight is to leave you get the bums rush over to their sales counter where you get the "choice" of buying a fecking expensive return ticket on their shitty plane - that you don't want or need, or missing your plane. Uncle Markits advise: Take your last AirAsia online ticket and photoshop the dates, flight numbers and destination to fit your "return" then print it out and fuck a Virgin and their silly policies!

Davita I would never suggest any illegal doings I'm far too cowardly to do that. I do believe that this would suffice to keep the Virgin wolves at bay as it would seem to "prove" that Queeny did in fact have a ticket waiting for her at the nearest AirAsia desk.
davita
Good one markit, but makes me wonder. On Air Asia X the passport and ticket has to be the same person .....does Queeny even have a passport.... and from which country, she is after all Queen of Australia/Canada and 20+ other Commomwealth countries... and her husband is Greek right.
Markit
Na, she just flashes them a 5 note. It has her picture on it, kinda like Rangi and his rabbit makes her unique (not to say strange).

She greases Imigrasi with a mere 5 quid...that'd be right. She is a mean old Scotslass. I worked for her as an Air Force Officer for 22 years and my pay was diddly squat. I took the pension as a cash commuted amount of GBP5,000 then invested it so 16 years later, added to a secondary pension, it made GBP1M+. So I should have been more grateful for her seed money. She did present me with a couple of medals Silver and Gold...I had them checked...they're only plated...I thought I could make a killing selling them as solid. Her son (Prince Charles) sat on my kee in the cockpit of a VC10 on a flight from Gan to Melbourne and back to Perth and Gan in the Indian ocean. He attended the requiem for the Australian PM Harold Holt, who went missing swimming and presumed drowned.
