Indonesia's accident-plagued aviation industry has more airlines with the lowest safety ranking than any other country in the world according to an annual survey. The plane safety rating website AirlineRatings.com surveyed 407 of the world's major airlines, giving each a safety score out of seven. Of the 10 airlines that scored just one point or less, all but one was from Indonesia. Qantas was ranked the world's safest airline for the third year in a row. The rating system takes into account factors including audits from aviation's governing bodies and lead associations as well as government audits and the airline's fatality record. There were multiple plane crashes in Indonesia in 2015, several involving loss of life. In December the previous year, 162 people were killed when an Indonesia AirAsia plane en route to Singapore ditched into the Java sea. "Australians need to exercise extreme caution when travelling to and around Indonesia and ensure they choose an airline that meets world standards," says AirlineRatings.com editor Geoffrey Thomas. "Aviation is critical to the economic development of Indonesia yet the government appears unwilling or incapable of meeting its international obligations by upgrading its oversight of its airline industry," he said. "Also many Indonesian airports don't meet international standards while navigation aids in some locations don't work or are sub optimal." Whilst I said I wouldn't comment on the contents of the publication as I haven't read the report.....I will comment on your post #4 There are many ways to assess safety, comfort, profitibility, investment etc......up to each to make the determination for whatever purpose. One thing clear is that Qantas has had an outstanding safety record over the years and the standards applied are as good as many other equally safe airlines. However, it should be noted that Qantas, in fiscal 2014, lost AUD 2.8 billion and have since had to let-go some 15% of its work force, including pilots and engineers. In 2015 it regained some profitability. Whether this will cause some disruption to its safety record in coming years will remain to be seen.

While I would never dream of contradicting you or disagree in any way about airlines given your proud past. They had a huge write down in 2014. So they were always going to make a good profit in 2015. Have a read about Alan Joyce bonus set up and to me it's clear he got rid of a lot in 2014 so he could look good and pocket over $20m. Apart from that the Pilots and engineers had it good and as you know very strong unions. Funny you should mention their safety record in coming years as my friend a qantas capt agrees and thinks the cuts will affect their safety record. But I know from him how well trained they are ,how much time they spend in simulators and the regular tests they get. They are very cocky however

I'm not sure that Qantas do any more training and testing than any other major airline in the world. They have a high safety rating because they have not had a major fatal accident in many years. Statistically...if that unfortunate event occurred...their position would plummet. There are certain IATA standards that most airlines comply with but, sadly, very few in Indonesia or with budget airlines. Australia does have strong unions which maintained standards of training and compensation and Qantas, like BOAC, used to be owned by government, (costly). Qantas was privatized around 1995. By far the most training I ever received was when I was in Transport Command in the RAF...and I know the RAAF and USAF transport crew also train extensively .....after all, the taxpayer pays....:icon_e_biggrin: That is why those crew are in high demand by airlines.
