paulseawind wroteNot wanting to open a huge dialogue here but can she say cat and also kucing? Dog and also anjing? Airplane and also pesawat?
Yes, and she even knows all her numbers in both languages :)
A while ago my husband told me he was concerned that our daughter wasn't learning english as quickly as she was learning Indonesian, and I ask him why, and he said because she never talks to him in english. I was like, duh, you're Indonesian, you speak to her in Indonesian, why would she speak to you in english?!!!! He then realized that she easily switches languages depending on who she's talking to.
For the most part she knows her words in both languages, but there's always going to be certain words that she prefers in one language over another, or is easier to pronounce. It's amazing how easily toddlers learn things. I'm from the french part of Canada (but my mother tongue is english), and I struggled my entire childhood and adolescence learning french, it would have been much easier if I had been exposed to it earlier on.

paulseawind wroteNTSH, this is very insightful for me, and thanks very much for the information. It's been a long time since I dealt with toddlers (my son is 28 now). I had a business arrangement with Dr Christopher Green, Child Psychologist from Camperdown Hospital way back then. He was most informative on toddlers (ours was around that age at the time) and Chris wrote the book 'Toddler Taming' which was a big hit. But he never spoke (to me) about multi-lingual or the like. He was more into their behaviour and put his funny Irish slant onto it. Does your daughter still exhibit the normal behavioural traits of a toddler? I'd expect so, but with some interesting differences. However, with their ability to choose the language, at that age, depending on who they are talking with, is quite fascinating. I have been a member of MENSA since May 1982 and I never heard of this. I have spoken with the Gifted Children people (from MENSA) and they never mentioned multi-lingual families but now I see it is an important parameter in the scheme of things. It can only be a good thing.
Even though I can speak 4 languages English ,Scottish, Australian and Drunken Scottish(this one particularly hard to understand even to fellow speakers)
I was rejected by MENSA(capitals for effect) on 3 occasions.
Feeling down I contacted my Psychologist/Psychiatrist Dr Phil whom I knew pretty well from lying on the couch watching daytime TV.
He wouldn't talk about the MENSA problem but sent me to rehab instead.
I feel better now and am keen on moving to Bali when they let me out.

paulseawind wroteIt's always in capitals, don't fret it.
When you get to Bali, don't come to my place. One genius is enough, thanks.
We don't need any Scottish ingenuity here. We have all the Aussie nous we need.
BTW, you get to sit the test once, not 3 times. It's a one-shot Charlie kind of thing. I was the Proctor (in Darwin) for several years. That's how I know this stuff. There are 2 tests. You need to 'pass' only one of them. Most of us pass both of them. The second one is called 'Culture Fair'. You don't need to speak English to do it. In fact, you could be speaking Lithuanian Lip Whistle full time and still sit that test and pass it.
You can actually sit it again if you failed before July 2014 and on their logo they don't have it in capitals. As for the 'Culture Fair" I thought yogurt had more culture than Aussies
However I'm disappointed not being invited to your place, it means I will just have to go to bars drink that cold beer and have the intelligent stimulating conversation with mere drunken mortals.
I wonder if they will know as much about everything as you.

I also sent my daughter to Montessori for the social aspect. She is 4 year and 4 months old now and didn't speak anything until 3 years old. Still can't speak Indo tthough (maybe that's a blessing lol).
I have a son who is 15 months old. I really don't want him to be as backward as her but without knowing the reason why, is difficult

This PSB is just a the last in a long line of newbies that burst onto the forum after lurking for years and have so much to share that it just froths with inanity and repressed bull crap.
Remember our good friend Gerkin? Attacked everyone and everything until the new meds finally kicked in and now comes and goes with barely a whisper.
Well PSB I have to say your supply of homilies and home truths is running down even faster than Gerkins did. Perhaps your drug tolerance is lower or your manic cycle is winding down. We'll see how it is after the full moon.

A million dollars to live in Bali? I'll have to check my bank balance then, since I've been living here for 20 years and didn't realise that I'm a closet millionaire.

Probably not, GD. Because they are drunken boofheads and poofs in a bar (listening to Beethoven, Mozart and the rest of those fags) with nothing better to do.
You won't find me there.
If I have nothing to do I will be doing that at home.
Your buddy-buddy visit with MKWT should sort out your lusts for knowledge because he truly believes he knows everything there is to know about living in Bali.
After a visit to his abode you will feel empowered like you never were before.
And you will have been orientated to the East. Trust me - NEVER buy there.
PSW - What is it with you and the homophobic thing , for a Mensan its pretty narrow minded, these composers you mentioned were geniuses in their field.
I have never heard Mozart and Beethoven played in a bar.
If something happened to you in your past I'm sorry, if not I'm confused with your mindset and its pretty sad in my opinion.
Of course I will take up MKT generous offer of his show and tell, you don't need to be a Mensan to work out that's the smart thing to do and you will get the truth without bull****.
As for buying there I'm not ready to buy yet , but am open minded and want to look.
p.s. You sound like a jealous ex girlfiend

To my way of thinking, "super intelligent" people don't need to brag that they're "smarter" than the other 98%.
So, you got into MENSA. So what, who cares and does that mean we have to believe anything [BOLD]you[/BOLD] say more?
It's no surprise that your son doesn't want to talk to you. Why should he? You're too smart for the human unit, right?
I have spoken with the Gifted Children people (from MENSA) and they never mentioned multi-lingual families but now I see it is an important parameter in the scheme of things.
MENSA started in 1945. Had a long time to consider "multi-lingual families". Does that mean that MENSA members aren't as smart as they think they are? Looks like it.
Just out of curiosity, I went to their website and inflicted their training questions on myself. Only got 80% but I wasn't really trying. WTF.
Anybody who wants to become a "member" can get an independent IQ test from a registered psychologist or approved testing service.
I was a registered psychologist in my country (retired now), but I guess I could whip up a fake "report" of
my test results on nice-looking letterhead paper and join the club.
One genius is enough, thanks.
Of which "genius" do you speak? Enlighten us mere mortals (and non-mensa members).
I viewed this thread because I was brought up in a muli-lingual family. My mother spoke 16 languages and my father seven.
By the age of five, I spoke Lithuanian, German, some Russian and a smattering of English (which improved when I was immersed in a real English-speaking country).
In retrospect, I don't think that exposure to different languages at a young age impeded me in any way that I can think of.
My half-Balinese son went to a Montessori school in Ubud when he was young. Didn't really "learn" anything but that didn't surprise me.
What he got was social stuff (interaction with children of rich expats, Balinese teachers, some handicapped children, and so on).
I thought that that was more important than the actual "curriculum", whatever it was supposed to be.
Given enough care, support, encouragement, most children adapt pretty quickly to whatever environment they're in.
What happens at home is in the hands of the adults. Children are amazingly resilient. One should never underestimate what they're capable of.
And "seawind"...some of your superciliousness is getting annoying. What are you trying to prove?

I found it amusing that you dissected my original post, took the time and effort to do so, and ended by insulting me.

Yeah - blame genetics, your parents, destiny for your current state of mind. Did MENSA pick you up as a toddler? Could be a new topic for the research group.
Of course, I haven't met you in person, but off the top of my rusty psychological head, you definitely qualify as "a suitable case for treatment". I'm not joking.

haha Johnny Cool the reason you don't need the 500 grand is that you probably have bought evth many years ago ... seriously for a newcomer who need to buy a house, start a business, buy a car, have some dough on the bank left for life expenses I don't think 500 is too high. Bali getting more and more expensive

I think babies, toddlers, and young children learn languages differently and much more easily than adults do learning a new or second language. I don't think a toddler is particularly "gifted" if they learn more than one language, it's that they've been given the opportunity to do so. Many societies are multilingual, look at Indonesia for example, majority of Indonesians speak at least 2 languages, if not more, and majority of them learned at least 2 languages starting at a very young age.
