Following on from the Best place in the best country. Opinions what is the best area to live in Bali. Scenery ,easy access to amenities , easy traffic, lower crime, woman ,men, friendlier people and locals,good for night out etc etc

As most of Bali (bar the deep south) is very similar I think that any choice of "the best place in bali" will be subject to minor variations of preference. The girls are all happy, willing and beautiful, the beer's the same and ditto the food. Some like mountains and others seaside. Depends on you.

But aren't amenities different, hospitals etc Are prices different eg land ,property , retail prices for goods. Why do you choose to stay where you stay?

I have a favorite place that is beautiful, quiet and untouched. But sorry I can not share it as I don't want that to change hehehe

I place that is NOT wonderful at this moment is my place. My staff have chopped down a tree, straight across the neighbours roof. Of course there are numerous broken tiles and it is starting to rain. I should have stayed in the bloody hospital.

I've lived here long enough and advised more than a few "how, what and where" and if you follow my advise it will save you needless pain and lots of dosh in any currency you care to name. If you don't then I still have some cheese.

Some people need the mountains. Others want the beach. Facilities are always a consideration but people (foreigners) do live in non-facilitated areas. Up to you. I'd advise against living up the top end of a steep road because sometime that road will deteriorate and when it's raining and you need to get to the hospital, it's possible to become a casualty as well. The expats in Kayuputih are used to it as are the dwellers of other northern desas. Here, there is a town in the north on the mountains that is to be avoided at night because the locals drink alcohol (probably arak) and start bashing each other. I don't let my driver take me through there if it's dark. Cempaga? Lots of people choose Sanur but they also take the gnarly traffic conditions with them and have to strategically plan their travel or sit complainingly in traffic jams that will never get any easier. Others are choosing west coast but within easy driving range of the shopping. North of Seminyak is growing. It's almost impossible to 'declare' a particular place is the best place to live. Expats live all over the island. Some people want big land. Some people need to be near reliable medical facilities. In the North, we have only one main road linking the major centres. 2 lanes. That's it. Ten years from now that will be a royal PITA. But I can't see a rail line going in. It might end up being better to take the ferry that doesn't exist yet.

Just read PoreSoreWilli's missive and it's a load of rubbish, so true to type. The only dry part of Karangasem is that on the northern side of the island i.e. on the same coast as PSW is wayyyy up in Lovina. They are about as different as chalk and cheese. My side (Amlapura/Candi Dasa) is still green and lush even after 4 months without rainfall. We all have access to free running springs that NEVER dry out and keep it lush. And if it does rain, guess what, it rains on this side of the mountain and not on the north side, hence the dryness there. The Lovina/Singaraja crowd have all been importing trucks of water now for months - that's what the estate agents over there never mention. Wonder why? What does a truck of water cost these days 1 Juta?

Will be there in Candi Dasa about 3 weeks. I have easy access to lots of cheese hate the stuff myself. Will pm the Beast from the East

So if the question here is with regard to expat living I would keep in mind * Internet options - I would be after Telkom's fibre service (called Indihome) * Water supply * car parking * Eating out options - how interesting are the local warungs/restaurant* and more...

I've been coming to Bali and Indonesia for nearly 35 years now and predominantly I have stuck to the coastlines. I now find myself on the outskirts of Ubud where I have lived for the last 6 months. I don't often go into town because of the chaos on the roads and choose my timing as to when I do. I don't feel the need for fancy restaurants or nightclubs although there is a certain comfort just knowing that they're there. I miss living on the coast because of my penchant for waking up and going surfing but I have found that I love the cooler climes of the hills. To go surfing for me takes at least an hours drive but living up here I can access the east coast or west coast, depending on the seasonal winds and swells, and enjoy uncrowded surfing conditions at places that don't have nightclubs and 5 star restaurants which means uncrowded surf. I'm finding that I like this area very much, it suits my purpose and I don't even do yoga or paint. I have access to the entire island from here without the hassle of travelling through any major centres if I want and I don't need the excitement of a holiday maker with limited time constraints. East coast, north of Padangbai is high on my list to investigate further and my only hesitation is the seasonal nature of the fickle surf conditions. West coast ditto but the traffic up that way is mental, always and the surf is also seasonal favouring the dry season. The North coast...no surf but has wonderful National Parklands. The Southern coastline of the area surrounding the Bukit, well nothing needs to be said. So where I am gets my vote.....for now.... but who knows how I might feel in the next 6 months. Not me that's for sure.
