Taking my Harley to Bali

Me and the missus are moving to Bali soon(2 months)and I want to take my Harley so I can tour around a bit and have a good look around.We intend to go for 3-5 years to start with.We will be on retirement visas,and are both 62.We have very good local friends,as we have been going to Bali for 23 years.I have seen a HQ holden driving around and some other oz stuff,so I assume you can get them in,but how hard is it.Any advise out there guys???

You will have a great great deal of trouble trying to get it in (overland only) and you will never register it. Holden had a factory in jakarta until 1973 so plenty of old holden's around.

The import fees on your bike will be the hassle. Contact the Big Bike crew here and they will give you all the info. Meanwhile you can borrow my EJ Holden. Just do not try to attatch any fridge magnets to the bloody thing, I am sure they will not stick.

Get one of the local 125cc scooters. They take out the baffles and some are bored-out so they are louder than your hog. :D :highly_amused:

The 40% luxury tax that Fred 2 mentions is a killer, they will get from every angle on this. A good mate of mine is getting a boat built in Banyuwangi (Java). This is costing him $400,000 (Aud). He has paid import duties on all items that needed to be imported. He is now getting slugged $160,000 for the luxury tax.

You are going to end up paying 2 to 5 time its value without even benign certain to have the proper documentation to register it here and be able to ride it, you still have to pay import charge 70% , 40% luxury tax, 10% PPn, 5% pph, plus handling charge, clearance charge, warehouse charge, delivery charge. Customs will set the price & the bike must have under 100km & under 12months old, with registraton papers from Australia. If you are bringing in a classic, you are better off dismantling in parts. Engine and chassis being the most difficult and impossible is registration paperwork (STNK & BPKB). Unless you have diplomatic priviledges. The big bike clubs sometime do runs to Malaysia and bring back bikes but cannot get legal paperwork (STNK & BPKB).

Last year, when in Flores, we met a West Aussie who had bought a 600cc bike (Yamaha I think) from Perth to Jakarta with the plan of riding from somewhere in Sumatra to Timor - then back to Aust. He took so long to get it onto the road in Jakarta - more than a month I think - that he cut Sumatra from his plan. So when we saw him in Flores he had come a long way. He talked of troubles - like he had clutch trouble and then a lot of difficulty getting it fixed. The local mechanics had never seen a bike like it and getting parts took ages. We did not see the bike because he put it on a truck to cross the mountainous part of Flores - we got the feeling that his sense of adventure was draining away at this stage. His original plan had been to take the bike back to Aust - but at this stage he was more inclined to ditch it. Clearly he would have done better to get himself to Sumatra, then buy an Indo bike - 250cc if he wanted "big". Then getting service along the way would be easy, and selling it elsewhere in Indo before departing would be possible.

If it's transport you are after then I suggest you buy a ABS NMAX from Yamaha (built here so cheap - 28 million). It does all the things any other bike can but easier. With ABS and automatic trany along with a gutsy (!) 150cc motor. You really can't go any faster on the Indo roads and the seat is way more comfortable than the competition. If it's "cool" you are after I've gotta tell you the only person that manages to be cool after 60 is Keith Richards, unless you are him then bow gracefully to your years friend and leave the children's toys for the children...

Markit ABS sticker on a motor bike built in Indonesia, only means you have a sticker on you bike:icon_eek: it has nothing to do with Anti-lock brake system. When you put your front brake on it also pulls the rear brake cable as well. My honda vario has the same sticker, ABS, Idle Stop and auto but only 125cc, I have test ride both the new Vario 150cc & the Nmax 150cc. Yamaha was trying to sell me the T-max but at over Rp200,000,000.00(only$11,500 in Aust) you could buy a Harley for that price. When riding for over 1hour I still prefer the Scorpio, a lot easier on the old bum.

Fred this ABS is the real deal - death by baxo proved it - was tootling along minding my own and out of a side road... blah blah blah. Long story cut short (and life too almost) hammered the brakes and got the familiar stutter that ABS gives you, and I'm still here to prove it. Haven't sat the Skorpio but a bud of mine has one and he has to get off every hour to recirculate his arse and I just keep on going and going, but bums do differ.
