Bali flights cancelled

I have just back from Singapore after a delayed departure due to the ash. Me and the wife take more cash and clothes than we need and it paid off in this case.Traveling alone I could probably have got here earlier but later is better never. Immigration was a breeze this time as I was told to join the wife through the Indonesian channel.

Flights in and out of Australia may be impacted by planned industrial action by Customs and Border Protection Officers at International Airports on 9th November 2015. This industrial action may delay passenger processing through Customs so Virgin Australia is advising guests departing Australia to arrive 3 hours before their scheduled flight. I don't think the unions are as strong anymore, probably decisions made by accountants who don't want to use extra fuel just in case, The ones with a Scottish accent(although a great accent are a dying breed and lucky for their members it wasn't an English accent)

You are probably right...those original immigrant union stewards (long left Scotland after ruining the unions there, including my father's career as a decent union leader) are long in the tooth by now. Also, maybe because Alan Joyce (Qantas CEO) turned the airline around to profit and then paid himself $10 million bonus...Alan Joyce gets $9.8 million bonus in $11.8 million salary at Qantas btw geedee...I don't think you have the 'reply with quote' quite right. Since nobody asked me I'll say anyway: For my money the the Ozzy hyper tension has to do with the fact that all Oz airlines are operating on the knife edge of bankruptcy. With the typical western predilection for suing and large payments for "suffering" and "victims" from the courts it would probably only take one flopped bird with associated butchers bill to drive them any one of them out of business. Lawyers have said "better (us) safe than sorry". But what do I know?

As we have done previously, we will schedule recovery services when possible and contact customers directly."[/I] This means they send empty A/C to Bali to bring back passengers who are stuck here. I don't understand that logic. They cancelled revenue flights into Bali as they considered flight safety could be jeopardised....but no problem to send an empty A/C with crew...:confused::icon_rolleyes:

Re: post # 29 I think everything in Singapore is more expensive than neighboring countries. When I was using Sosbud/Visa runs to stay in RI I often found flying JKT-KL than JKT-SIN, which is about about twice the distance....was cheaper; probably due to those landing and parking fees and taxes in Singapore. My point about Jetstar recovering passengers from Bali is based on safety...how can they justify sending crew when they already said they will not send passengers due to safety concerns...I'd like to see the Pilot's Union and Cabin Crew's Union reaction to that logic.

Davita 1.How much extra fuel is a Plane required to carry in case of emergency. Is it a standard thing or do different airlines have different rules. 2. Do some airlines have a captain bonus for using less fuel.

Airline economics are a different kettle of fish. When we were diverted to Singapore on Qatar Airways on our flight from Edinburgh to Denpasar in July, Qatar airways flew the empty A320 back to Doha and another empty one with a new crew to Singapore the next day rather than leave the plane on the ground at Changi. Apparently it is cheaper for them to do it that way. The parking fees in Singapore must be horrendous.

I've been retired from airline business since 1990 so my info may not be accurate. Hopefully someone current can update/correct or offer better info. 1. Yes. There is a standard minimum excess fuel all A/C carry. It is based on the chosen diversion/alternate to be reached in case the arrival airport is suddenly closed....and the kind of navigation facility available. There is also a standard 10%? of total fuel carried for exigencies enroute as the altitude requested and/or flight routes requested, on the flight plan, may not ultimately be available...and there is the extra a crew will add because they don't want to crap their pants....:indecisiveness: There are times when the tanks are full of fuel and still not enough to legally complete the flight. In this event a nearer airport is selected as the arrival and the crew will attempt to conserve enough fuel so that, nearer to the arrival time, there IS enough to legally carry on to the original destination...and the flight plan is modified enroute. 2. That sounds like one of those urban myths. I've never heard of any major airline doing that it but wouldn't be surprised if small charter companies do employ such tactics. In my case I do know that if a Capt. consistantly puts on [B]too[/B] much fuel he might be interviewed as to the reason, by the chief pilot. And I'll bet you thought we just drank tea, b/sd about our stock market profit or golf handicap and oggled the flight attendants. Actually, you wouldn't be far wrong...:icon_rolleyes:

Jetstar has cancelled the Wednesday flight BNE-DPS as well now, so we have given up and cancelled the booking. JS did give us a voucher for the entire amount though. We'll be there at Christmas anyway, when, with a bit of karma, Rinjani has run out of puff. Bloody volcanoes! I was looking forward to being a bachelor for 10 days (albeit with 2 kids to look after).
