Mobile wifi in Bali

In Australia, I bought myself a wifi modem from Vodaphone. I have no idea how it works, [U]but it does not require any software on my laptop[/U] other than standard wifi connectivity that is built in with the operating system. I switch it on, and connect to the Vodaphone wifi network wherever I may be and I have an internet connection. Is there such a thing in Bali? If so, where does it work - Kuta, Ubud, everywhere?

smartfren moden same thing ie. broadband dongle.....sometimes the conectivity is crap depending where you are

Buy a Huawei USB modem, around Rp 350 to 400,000 at many of the larger phone kiosks. Then try a few different sim cards and add a data package to each. Reception is good or bad for different providers, depending on your area. I use Simpati (after trying XL and Tri) and top up with Flash Internet package. Rp 100,000 gives 2 GB of data during the day and another 2 GB after midnight. [ATTACH]2540.vB[/ATTACH]

Thanks, that alll makes sense but I am one of the two people left on earth who do not own a smartphone. My wife has a Samsung and I hate the thing. It took us two days to work out how to answer the phone when we first got it. If you see somebody in Sanur with a large bottle of Bintang in front of him and an old Nokia, that'll be me.

i have found the Smartfren modem works faster than phone pulsa internet..but sometimes difficult to find the vouchers used to recharge

I understand your frustration completely having only had a smartphone for a year. I still see it as a phone with added gimmicks, however some of those gimmicks are great time-savers. The inbuilt GPS map system is brilliant and I use it regularly. It's also handy in those places where you didn't take your laptop to check bank accounts, email etc.

If you use a modem with a dongle and a SIM card stuck in it then it will be exactly the same speed etc as sticking the same SIM into your smartphone. Don't waste your time with modems, just use your smartphone's "hotspot" to get Internet to your laptop. It's pretty cheap and Simpati seems to be very popular with 2Gig data at Rp77,000. At first it can be a little confusing buying data credit off your phone credit which you need to do or your phone credit ("pulsa") will drop incredibly fast. The menu instructions are all in Bahasa and more than slightly confusing. Go to a local bar and ask a friendly expat to help you out and all will be fine!! :) In fact, if you go to any bar in Sanur, 'no idea' will be there and if he can't help you then he will find someone nearby who can!

Well, don't go drinking too early in the morning. The bartender might get confused when you ask for the 'free wife'.
