Well I agree it is probably the right decision as it looked like a gold-plated option for Jakarta-Bandung while eveyone else languishes. But I also agree that Jokowi's admin seems to flip-flop too much. They should have seen the folly much earlier before calling for tenders.

Your link above is out of date. Today's JakPost page 1 says... "Japanese and Chinese envoys to Indonesia could not hide their displeasure regarding the government's decision to cancel the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway project after the two Asean rivals had competed for months to secure the contract." It goes on to say that RI Gov't hoped to invite japan and Chine to participate in a medium train project.....:indecisiveness:

On just a slightly different curve to the thread, what is the news concerning the tollroad from Denpasar to Gilimanuk? This was supposed to have started last month and contracted by an outfit that has built tollroads in the past. There has certainly been a lot of bs in the past and usually understood as such by the expat community, but this project was supposedly federally funded and contracted by a credible and experienced Indonesian contractor. Anyone with facts?

Well let's see to the current things. In Jakarta rapid transportation system still under development and it's going slow. A tram and monorail line in Surabaya was announced on 2007, still done nothing. HSL JKT-Bandung will be so short and expensive. However, there's enough distance to reach the maximum speed. The question is what traffic will be, i.e. how much will be the price for a ticket and how many ppl would like to buy it for that price. I don't think is a good idea for such poor country. What countries currently has High speed railways? China, Japan, Korea, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Belguim, The Netherlands, UK... maybe some else. But economy of those counties, citizen mobility and their income are incomparable with Indonesia. So I don't believe it can be more than just blah-blah.
