Here's this years schedule for the buffalo races as far as I can tell. If anyone has been to them in years gone by I would greatly recommend your advice on which are the best to go see - I'm assuming that the Governor's might be the best but first hand experience would be great. 08 September 2013 Pangkung Dalem, Jembrana 22 September 2013 Mertasari, Jembrana 06 October 2013 Kaliakah, Jembrana 20 October 2013 Delod Berawah, Jembrana 03 November 2013 Awen, Jembrana 17 November 2013 Delod Berawah, Jembrana (Governor's Cup)Ta in advanceMarkit

I have never been so this might be a dumb question. Is it an all day event or should I arrive at a specific time to see the action. I would hate to make the trip just to find I had missed all the fun.

Gozer did you wake up and forget you are in Bali?
Gozer
LOL maybe... I still sometimes forget that I am the only person who worries about the time.

Have only attended Bull Races in Perancak (sp.), and they will be held every Sunday from Sept. 15th. thru all Oct. Perancak is south of Negara on the coast.Hotel Puri Da Juma in Pekutatan is a decent place to stay and have Bull Race info.

I still haven't heard if this event is worth going all the way to Negara to see? Last Water buffalo races I saw were in Lovina last year and, I kid you not, the drivers spend most of the afternoon lovingly fondling and polishing the bulls enormous balls and then 15 minutes walking them back and forth on the field - slowly, I guess their nuts probably hurt. Now this may be some fantastic local color for them that are avid bull's balls fans but yours truly felt kinda frustrated having driven all the way to Lovina for 1/4 hour racing and 2 hours stroking the goodies in the boiling sun. They did have some impressive testicals on show, though. If that's your bag (pun intended)

Anyone know shite about this? Fecking hell are you all stuck in Kuta?

OOps correction...I thought it amusing to tell my wife about this and now she's excited to go...Markit...please keep us informed!

Was just in Negara to see the Governor's Cup Water-buffalo races which were much touted around the various organs - paper, internet and word of mouth for the 17th. In true Balinese style and after much hard work and organising myself and 2 friends were up bright and early on the morning of the 17th in Negara to find they've changed the race to the next Sunday - without telling anyone, of course. "Welcome to Bali" is never far from my lips.

The thing is that where we finally ended up asking for directions to this wonderful event was a corner police station just across the street from a massive poster advertising the races but without a date...? So it would appear that the Balinese organisers (and I use the term very, very loosely) also were unclear when it was all going to happen. Two weeks ago we had a wonderful dancing and folklore event here in the Water Palace at Ujung and one of the guiding lights of the tourism business here in Karangasem only was able to inform us of it happening on the day after it started because - nobody had bothered to tell him or anyone else that it was happening. In the same vein last week we were told that something was going to happen and just coincidentally we know one of the leading dancers - she told us that her troupe were only told a few days in advance that the event was even going to happen and that they should choreograph a special dance to welcome all the government officials that were expected to attend. As I think has been said elsewhere - a 6 year old child would make a better job of organising his own birthday party. What makes me truly incandescent is that the Balinese have all this fantastic cultural baggage that they would love to share with the world and Indonesia has invested shed loads of money marketing the archipelago and it's culture to the world but when you finally get here you miss it all cause some dumb fuck forgets to advertise it.

I'm not going to bother, thanks Spicy, and I fully expect in the usual way, to be informed on Monday that they "were the best races anyone of the millions that where there had ever, ever seen". Feck them and their stupid cows!
