Hi,2 weeks ago when in Bali Deli i noticed a few things...All pre-packaged imported meat non existent - all replaced with the local "mamas" stuff. Selection of carving meats the worst ive ever seen in the last 10 yearsOranges and apples were the worst ive ever seen, withered and softFruit selection in general was terrible.MEat selection still appeared ok - but i did notice that a lot of the high dollar stuff wasnt available, had been replaced with locally sourced meats (although this local replacement meat still looked quite good in fairness)No quality ice cream availableNone if this affects us too greatly as our maid picks up most of our fruit and veg at the markets on the way to work. But for the sake of convenience and when we feel the need, we do go down there safe in the knowlege that if we crave formaldahyde free quality or decadant treats, its on hand (albeit ofr a hefty price).I tried asking many of the staff what was going on but none were willing to talk until the checkout girl finally sid "ganti management"All the above were just my observations, and i'm hoping it was maybe just end of Ramadan food shortages combined with temporary imported meat importation rort that usually goes on before / during every Ramadan....but did any else notice this also about 2 weeks ago?I left Bali 2 weeks ago and will be back in 2 weeks......just wondering if this situation has corrected or has it set in for good? Do i need to stuff my saddlebags with with meat and cheese when i next come back into Bali?Maybe the owner got sick of everything in his store being deemed "luxury "items" and saddled with ridiculous taxes so did the wise thing and sold out before things got even worse?Anyone got the inside scoop?

Don't know the answer. Only, I was in their offshoot in Sanur twice last week and didn't notice the problems you met. Fruit & veg OK and still plenty of crazy price imported beef and cheese salami etc as well as all the Mama's/Soejasch stuff. Maybe I'll drop into the main shop later today and have a look?"Do i need to stuff my saddlebags with with meat and cheese when i next come back into Bali?" Well that's a given, isn't it?

Since Lotte owns it (bought Marko Indonesia), the number and variety of imported products has noticeable gone down. Mostly items that can get spoiled. I guess new management felt that if they cut back on those items, profit will go up.I am fairly sure that that has not happened. Totally without scientific proof, I dare to say that now less people visit the store, and if they do, spend less Rp.

If Bali Deli no longer satisfies maybe try the new Gourmet food mart in the basement of Lotte Plaza on Sunset. It is the same building as the new Siloam Hospital, almost opposite to Carrefour.

If Bali Deli no longer satisfies maybe try the new Gourmet food mart in the basement of Lotte Plaza on Sunset. It is the same building as the new Siloam Hospital, almost opposite to CarrefourTried it thrice and not super impressed. looks impressive with the big wide isles and everything spaced out but to me its really full of nothing special except that its new and has decent airconditioning and a half ok bakery attached. For me - Carrefours a nightmare to park where to me it seems thousands of middle class Chinese/Indonesians meet to compare who has fattened up their firstborn sons the most. Everyone here has been trained to stand completely motionless once they get on an escalator or travellator. Bintangs a zoo where the deli actually smells of decaying offal (but can fun to watch the zoo exhibits), Lotte great if your a doomsday prepper but u need a forklift operators license to operate the trolleysPepito a glorified Bintang with a slighty better DeliPapaya full of Japanese on holidays but looking to buy cheap take away sushi Bali Deli pretentious and a flutter with fairies, fags, uber classy property agents / developers / unqualified architect types, vogue eco crusaders and sweat shop managing fashionistas - but it at least had the product. ANd it's fast in, fast out - so minimal exposure to the aforementioned. The ridiculous prices means usually not a great deal of shoppers so rarely have to queue.Hoping Bali Deli was just having temporary supply issues. I'll load up before coming in to be on the safe side....but interested to hear a field report if anyone does happen to drop in.

Have you tried the Pantry in Sanur? Maybe a little to far for you.

Maybe try Casa Gourmet in Seminyak Square.

It's not a place I go to very oftenFruit and veg OK plenty of choice including imported stuff at bizarre prices as usual.Fresh imported beef and lamb OK - plenty of stock and choice.Cheese - OK but not brilliant.Imported salami, ham, etc - virtually non-existent! Mama's and Aroma? Tons and tons of the stuff!Customers? Some - not many.

Customers? Some - not many.
How could they have customers in the Deli? It took me several months to find out they had a Deli upstairs. No signs or nothing. Did you know that they have a roof top restaurant above the Deli?

Did you know that they have a roof top restaurant above the Deli?
You're talking about the one in Sanur, not the main one in Legian.I agree with you that if you didn't know the mini-supermarket section was upstairs, it would remain unknown (unless you climbed up past it to the rooft top restauarant). Strange way to run a business. Some things are "cheap(er)" than the competition in Sanur (Hardy's and the Pantry), but mostly I find it more expensive. You never can tell unless you check prices for Brand X at all three. Not worth the hassle to save a few dollars.I do check some prices between Hardy's and Pantry (they're close to each other), and they're often different. If neither has what I actually want in stock, I'll check BaliDeli as a last resort.

Bali Deli restaurant on the third floor is the same as the one on the bottom floor...( Same menu )Kitchen is on the third floor, its quite entertaining watching the poor waiters/waitresses racingup and down the stairs with plates of food..

I've tried them all except for the Pantry - ill give it a go next time back. It seems the mamas and aromas brands have moved in, and imported brands are out. Something to do with protectionism and or that business with the crooked pollies having shares in local cattle production then changing the meat importation laws before Ramadan. OK so they've made their $$ , change it back already.

I used to think we didn't have as much choice in deli products around Ubud as people in the south but in reading this thread I realize how lucky we are to have the Ubud Deli between Mas and Ubud. They have great variety, quality, really helpful staff, and they deliver around Ubud. They also make yummy cappuccinos and have Gaya ice cream. That Deli just keeps getting better. If you live in the Ubud area and haven't been in there, treat yourself. They also sell kitchen equipment.

Thanks for jogging my memory I'll make a point of looking in next week.Glance at their website here:Ubud Deli

So is Bali Deli in Seminyak closing? I was there this morning and the place is empty, I would say 1/3 of their merchandise is gone-- not much fruit/veg, barely any yogurt or dairy products, no fresh fish, no imported deli meats, even their bakery had half of it's usual selection of fresh baked goods-- very disappointing! I was at the new Bali Deli on Jalan Pantai a few weeks ago and the place is huge, fully stocked, but not a single customer and all the workers were just standing around bored out of their minds..

Managed to get to damned near 60 without running into "charcuterie" - thanks, just wish we had some out here in the prairie :icon_redface:
