Is that right? I only ever use an international licence when I visit. Never been pulled over though.

Denpasar Police have processed 4000 traffic violations over the past 12 months, with 1000 reportedly carried out by foreign tourists. According to Adjunct Police Commissioner Nyoman Nuryana, the majority of the violations were in the Kuta and Denpasar areas, with many of the offences stemming from invalid license and registration documents, and the usage of helmets which do not abide by Indonesian National Standards (ISO). “Most of the foreign tourist violations occur in Kuta,” said Adjunct Commissioner Nuryana. Nuryana claims many of the offenders simply do not understand Indonesian road rules which he believes endangers other more experienced drivers on the road. “Because they do not know the way the traffic is conducted we must provide them with counselling,” added Nuryana. Denpasar Police has also noted a substantial decrease in violations concerning driver’s licenses since the provision of the one month license available to foreign tourists upon arriving in Indonesia. “Foreign tourists may have international drivers licenses but they must show licenses that are made here in Bali which are valid for only a month,” he said. Of the 1000 foreigners who offended, only 20% were sent to court with the others forced to pay a monetary fine.

It averages out to only around 11 violations per day. That is an incredibly low number and all of us who use these rds should give ourselves a pat on the back.

I always thought that if you had an international permit from Oz it was all OK as long as that permit was backed by your Oz licence to ride motorcycles and not just a car drivers licence. Hmmm. Always wear a proper helmet, not one of those shaped ice-cream buckets with a chin strap. You can't do it at home for good reason and those good reasons are amplified here.

The requirements for a foreign driver in Bali are an Int'l license together with one's valid license in one's country of origin, BOTH for whatever one is driving in Bali, car, motorcycle, tank, etc...

A Tank Licence Tintin...I want one of those and...any idea where I can buy a second-hand tank? When I lived in Hong Kong, before MTR was built and traffic was bad, my buddy bought one of those redundant military Land Rovers...it was a rusting hulk...but everybody got outta his way as he drove straight down any street.

There is [B]no[/B] such thing as an "International Drivers Licence" 2. There are International Drivers Permits (IDP) issued by automobile clubs 3. You must have a valid licence to drive/ride in your own country to get one 4. Correct. What people, including myself, call an "int'l driver license" is actually an "int'l driver permit" or "int'l driver document." Its purpose is to translate what's written on the driver license from your own country. The very few times I have been stopped by the police in Bali, each time the officers made the mistake of being satisfied with just my showing them my int'l driver "license," without my real license. As for a bule getting a Balinese Driver License, good luck...
