Indonesia’s Minister for Tourism is keen to develop Bali into a transit hotspot for other destinations throughout the archipelago as a way for the government to reach its goal of 10 million tourists by 2019.
Minister Arief Yahya likened Bali to the Thai capital Bangkok as a point of transit for tourists to venture into other parts of the country.
“We made Bali into a major tourist destination, the tourist hub of the country. If we look at Lombok, of the nearly 850,000 people who visited Lombok, 90% travelled through Bali,” said Minister Yahya in Jakarta on Thursday 16 October. Yahya believes Bangkok is an effective transit destination as it allows for tourists to easily connect to all parts of the country through its effective transportation network system, which caters to the some 16 million tourists who travel there every year.
“If we see Bali itself as having 10 million tourists a year then we must develop north, south, east and west,” added Yahya. The Minister also vowed to continue to pressure state airport operator Angkasa Pura to put into motion its plans for developing an airport in North Bali as approximately 74% of all tourists arrive on the island via air.
