hermit
@ Hermit,We will not change this land to anything, we would like it to stay a beautiful rice field as it is now and we are against any such of the developments ideas. Actually we are leasing it for that reason. The land farmers will keep on cultivating their lands. Now that more information is floating around, i would love that someone can come with a a BRILLIANT financial proposition to pay the people.
Thanks, that clarified a lot.I apologize if i doubted your intentions,my irritation was mostly fed by the other posters reactions. No,sorry,i have no real knowledge of nature conversation or a brilliant idea how to bring this off.But i wish you good luck as you seem really concerned about these matters. @Joji:So, (in your last sentence) you want to keep the people of Sumba living as subsistence farmers in the 3rd world forever?
No,i do not,i think i have give enough reasons why people should not convert ricefields.I already wrote my concern in an earlier post to which there was no reply.Sorry if my style has ruffled your feathers.Where did i declare motorbikes Forbidden?I was just trying to sketch a scenario that has been happening here in Bali over and over again.I have been here long enough to have seen it happen many times.Never heard of Joni Mitchell

Being called a Vinegarpisser I can put up with but not knowing Joni Mitchell is an offense against common decency. What were you doing in Holland during the 70s? Oh, that's right you guys could legally smoke dope - guess that answers my question huh?Why apologize for doubting his intentions? In my neck of the jungle people don't come along willy-nilly buying up prime land to save it for the rice farmers of the world. If they do in yours then I have a bridge in San Francisco that you might like to invest in?:icon_e_wink:

imho, how admirable your intentions are, the protecting of land and farmers...to realize this in a somewhat orderly way, you are going to have a shitload of work to do..It's pretty complicated how a kooperasi works, but I'll give it a shot in a most simplest way explainedBecause like joji suggests : a kooperasi for the farmers seems the most logical way to go..unfortunately a foreigner can hold no stakes within a kooperasi (legally), alongside the kooperasi there would have to be a LPD errected.things like the tractor, truck, seeds etcetc..will be bought by the kooperasi using the LPD money (your money) farmers put their sertifikats into the LPD and get X amount of money for that (loan), with this money they can buy their bikes or whatever.they would have to sell their beras to the kooperasi who in turn sells this on, profit of this selling on is used to pay for the truck/tractor/seeds etcetc..this is ofcourse a very short description, but I think you get the big picture :)

What is your payback? Just that warm and squidgy feeling that you are now remembered in many nightly prayers all over the island of Sumba? Is your last name Hood?
You're either Robin Hood or, like many other villas and resorts in Bali, you own a resort and you wanna buy the surrounding rice fields to secure your view.Just guessing ...
