Realizing that most LPG tanks and connection hoses are attached with small clamp screws, I need to hook up a Barbecue that has been made for use in the US and is measured in inches rather than centimeters. Does anyone know for certain if valves for LPG tanks and regulators would accept such a connection or must I have some sort of adapter with circumference threads calibrated in inch measurement and hose to my BBQ and the other end metric to fit to the tank.? Am currently in the US, and don't want to find a problem with connecting this outfit upon my return to Bali.
Attendent to this question is another concerning the regulator on the hose which is fitted on the hose in inches and wonder if regulators are different in Bali.
HELP!

Since the connection to your Barby will be the fecking rubber hose going to a nozzle and possibly a clamp just use what's on offer here and clamp it to the nozzle on your grill or?
Why worry about the US end attaching to Indo tanks just get a whole new pipe for the Barby end.
Not sure I'm clear on this - think I may need a little lie down...

If you mean you want to bring the BBQ from USA and convert it here I suggest a rethink.
I bought a new S/S table-top BBQ from Costco to take to Jakarta and couldn't simply convert...eventually I had a connection made which worked, but was pricey, and I could have bought a similar BBQ cheaper in Jakarta.
In RI the regulator clicks to the top of the LPG tank which has a different connection than a USA made tank. If your BBQ has a nipple end, and no internal regulator, it could work by cinching the LP hose to the nipple end.

NYdave has a good point about those seals...they suck and are prone to leaks but, if I may add another point, they do indicate when the tank is near empty. Because the pressure drops when near empty the seal is not so well pressurised and leaks....so you get a gas smell. I suggest check if the bottle is near empty before taking other remedial action.

You just need to change the regulator to an Indonesian one,the hoses on bbq`s are only about 1/2 inch or so and the differences between metric and inches on something that small is very little, just use a clamp that has a screw that you can tighten,my problem with lpg tanks here is that many of them leak right at the top where you connect the regulator, there is a rubber washer type of seal inside ,I remove it with a tooth pick or something small, and my supplier always has a supply of replacement seals and gives them to me for free,so I always have a couple on hand at all times,im saying this because sometimes you might smell gas and you think its your hose connection, its usually the seal in the cylinder, you can check your hose connection by applying some dish washing liquid around the end of the hose after you tighten the clamp, then connect the regulator and turn it on if you see bubbles then you need to tighten the clamp some more, but if no bubbles and you still smell gas its the seal inside the top of the cylinder

Thanks to all, it is appreciated in my confusion.
First off I searched the local market and couldn't find anything that suited my needs in Bali. Much of what I viewed was (I felt) exceedingly overpriced and readily subject to rust and corrosion. What is being brought over has been used by myself and stainless steel.
Being spooked by something potentially hazardous and mysterious to me in my ignorance, makes me want to avoid the screw clamp connectors which among other things will rust readily.
My rubber hose is connected to the BBQ by the mfr.'s clamp and a brass nut to the male end on the BBQ. That I would like to preserve, as it looks a like a better connection than a screw clamp connection. The hose to the regulator also has the same type clamp. This is also preferable, but there is a question as to whether the regulator is suitable for Indo., and if ok whether it will connect in turn to the valve attached to the tank. I understand the seal problem we all experience.
Davita your source of supply and mine are the same as well as the stainless steel, but don't understand why the new connector was so pricey. The whole hose and regulator are about 500,000.rp at Ace, and at the current exchange rate isn't bad. The problem is the nipple to the BBQ is too large in circumference for the hose to fit.
Otherwise the mention of the new regulator operating ok is good to know because that tells me that my existing regulator in the US and what is in Indo. must equate. It is only the difference between the valves to the tank......right?
Could you confirm this with me? Thanks

Why do you all insist on calling gas cooking Barbecuing?
The best barby in the world is a used (but clean) oil can cut in half fired with wood from either old chocolate or coffee trees. At a pinch you can use coconut husks.
The only nipples I need to worry about are those of my assistant while she helps tenderize the meat...
Nydave
Markit is correct once again, gas cooking is not real bbq`ing, honestly im not a great fan of bbq food, but I once went out to Jimbaran to the seafood places there and sure enough they were using coconut shells as the fuel source,i see my friend in Ny always buying some different types of wood chips I guess to add a flavor when he uses his Smoker ( not his bbq)for cooking, seems to take forever cooking on the smoker like 10-12 hours for some cuts of meat,

Hi Again Helpers,
Don't want to get off the subject. We can call the cooking device anything. It will be used as an oven out of doors.
At any rate you guys have been helpful in convincing me that the regulators are different, and I need an Indo. type regulator. From there on everything should work if the indo. hose will fit on the male outlet on the OVEN. Eyeballing tells me that the circumference is too large for an Indo. 3/8" hose with screw clamps; the latter to be purchased here hopefully with both clamp and screw of stainless steel. Fortunately a hose was purchased at Ace before leaving Bali; so I can try it out.
What a triumph for Balipod in providing info. unobtainable (for me) any place else. Many Thanks!

I have bbq`s both in New York and in Indonesia, the regulator on my Ny bbq has a screw on connection between the regulator and the tank/cylinder,the Indo regulator clips into the top of the tank/cylinder,therefore the Us regulator will not work cause there is no way to screw it to the Indonesia tank/cylinder Indonesian tanks/cylinders don't have a screw on connection, you need to buy a Indo regulator with the gauge on it and just connect it to the hose pipe, the connection into the back of the bbq is irrelivent, leave it as it is,as for the manufacturers clips im familiar with what you are talking about but have never seen them in Indo, and im sure that's one of the reasons Davita`s set up cost so much, anything is possible but at a price, thats your decision,as for the screw type clamp rusting yes you are right so replace it when you think its getting rusted, with Indo prices you will get about 6 of them for $1,and to prolong the rusting process then wrap it in electrical tape this will hold off the rusting for a while longer,

Buy stainless steel (S/S) worm gear hose clamps in USA. In Bali, even at the marine stores, they say they are S/S but they're not and those rust. Sometimes the band is S/S but the turning screw isn't. You can test with a magnet. True S/S cannot be magnetised.
As has been said...the Indonesian tank cannot accept an American screw connector. Some years ago ACE sold American tanks (to go with their American brand BBQs but now everythings Chinese).....I haven't seen those tanks in a while and would doubt if they could be refilled in RI anyway.
So...you will need to use an Indonesian tank. The Indonesian regulator connects to the tank using a special in-built twist and lock mechanism (cheap and sold everywhere) and it usually includes a contents gauge, but that's optional. The regulator is then connected to a nipple on whatever device be it an oven, hotplate or BBQ by an LP rubber hose and hose clamp. The USA BBQ don't normally use a hose clamp but have a scew-in connection...that is where there could be a problem. That screw-in connector needs to be converted to a nipple for the hose to slide over and be clamped with a proper sized S/S hose clamp.
Some USA BBQs come with its own internal regulator and, as the RI tank is connected directly to its own regulator, two regulators will not work.
This is a difficult subject to describe without pictures so...if someone has pics and add names to the units....we might all understand better

Your very welcome,we do try our best but unfortunately we are not experts, hope it all works out for you.

Just for instance....that fold-up legged S/S Costco table-top BBQ I mentioned in an earlier post. I took out of its box and put it into my biggest expandable suitcase...filled the corners with socks, underwear etc and it came with me.....free.
btw some say ghurka IS anenema... but not me...I have anathema to anenema...:icon_e_biggrin:

Sometime back in the 70`s or 80`s there was a rock band here is the Us,cant remember their name, anyway they were reasonably successful, but one time while they were in the studio recording a new album ,when they had recorded all the new songs there was still space left on the album ,one band member had written some lyrics some time before but they had never put music to the lyrics,so in a hurry they added music, the song was called Sweet Cherry Pie,,,i know this song and honestly its like a cheesy pop song completely different from the bands typical music however it filled the available space on the album,,the album was released and what do you know the biggest hit from the whole album was Sweet Cherry Pie,,,i recently watched an interview with the singer of the band who was explaining all this,he absoloutely hates the song ,,his exact words were if I had a gun I would have blown my ****ing head off because ever since that song was a hit I have never been known by my real name, not know for been the singer of the band,,im known as the Sweet Cherry Pie guy,,,
Why am I telling this well,i sorta feel like that guy,i have the feeling I will be known as the "Screw "guy from now on,ooh wellI guess I could be known as something worse,
Good luck with the lpg issue I have given all I can think of hopefully someone else has the answer to solve the problems,
Nydave
Now if you don't mind I have a question, nothing to do with connections, hose pipes, clamps or regulators, see about 4 years ago I had the same idea as you ,I went to P C Richards right at the end of the season here and bought a nice bbq for almost half price, which I was going to ship to Indo, I shopped around between federal express, ups, usps and also dhl,,,I couldn't believe the prices, usps and ups were almost the same price which was close to $750,,federal express was around $150 cheaper and dhl was something like $400,in the end I gave it as a gift to a friend of mine,it just wasn't worth it,im curious to know if you don't mind approx how much you are paying for shipping and what company you are using,,because I have several smaller items that I would like to send over, nothing really of any $$$ value more sentimental value,i can live without having them in indo but if the price was right then at least I have the option of sending or not,

Hi Nydave,
It will cost nothing to ship (hopefully). The oven is just smaller than my large suitcase which has a hard shell yet light weight casing, and is within size and weight limits. It is really a table top grill, but has 2 10,000BTU burners.
A few years back I dismantled and packed a heavy floor polisher that I could never completely re-assemble correctly, but with one guy steering and another holding it down, it works on my marble floors. The Customs guys shook me down for 300,000.rp. while saying over and over "good for me and good for you" till I wanted to puke, but it saved me at least 5 juta compared to buying one new in Bali.

Sorry I answered Dave, before seeing your post.
Don't confuse Ghurka he is an Aussie and confuses BBQ with Barbies........but I guess it all depends upon what people play with.
Nydave
i hope you get it thru without a problem,i don't mean to laugh at you but the way you tell the story about the polisher is funny and i keep imagining 2 of you wrestling with it,but hey if it works that's the main thing, thanks for the reply

You've reminded me of the famous Ozzie Barbie story.
Very English speaking fellow (EF) arrives in the outback and decides to meet the locals in the pub. He recognizes an Australian Digger (AD) from his hat with fly retarding corks hanging on string...
EF. "Good evening sir."
AD. "G'day mate...yiz be a pom right mate?"
EF. "Yes..I just arrived from UK and will be staying here for a while."
AD. "Then like to invite yiz to a Barbie mate."
EF. "Barbie...sorry, what is that?"
AD. "Ozzie Barbie mate...throw a few steaks on the fire, drink a couple oh coldies, into the woods for sweaty sex, drink more coldies, eat the steaks...then more sex...it's a traditional Ozzy Barbie mate."
EF. Excited at the prospect..."I'm up for that...when?"
AD. "Saturday mate."
EF. Now drooling at the prospect.."I'm free...whose all going to be there?"
AD. "Just you an me mate!"
