Draft bill could imprison couples co-habiting | Latest News From Bali | The Beat Daily
A new criminal code presented to the parliament yesterday could see jail sentences imposed for couples living together outside of marriage.
Article 488 of the criminal code, submitted by President Joko Widodo, applies to men and women living together and also criminalises specific acts which may be conducted by either homosexuals or couples of the opposite sex.
The draft bill still gives scope to judges to decide whether to imprison couples or impose a maximum fine of Rp. 50 million.
Homosexual couples may still live together, provided that neither is under-age. However if they are engaging in sexual acts defined by the bill they may face up to 12 years in jail.
