In an effort to sort out Bali’s mounting garbage issues, French-owned waste management company Sodaco Satarem has offered to cooperate with the Bali government to take over management of the beleaguered Suwung landfill site.
As previously reported, the site is working over capacity, and is not able to accommodate the daily amount of garbage generated.
Manager of Sodaco Energy Indonesia (an arm of Satarem), Johan Marino, made the announcement during a meeting with the Deputy Governor of Bali, Ketut Sudikerta at the governor’s office yesterday.
“Until now Bali has not supported an adequate level of solid waste management. If not immediately treated, we are worried this trash will lead to more serious problems,” Marino stated.
Soda Satarem has already had success managing waste in countries such as in Africa and China, and have subsequently seen the potential for better waste management at Suwung.
The proposal was met with encouragement from Vice-Governor Sudikerta, who promised to bring up the issue with the relevant government representatives.
According Sudikerta, the average volume of waste going into Suwung landfill is around 1500 tons per day. To that end, Sudikerta hopes Sodaco Satarem can provide another alternative for dealing with waste.
“We really are in need alternatives for waste management in Bali. At least the old ways are no longer useful, hopefully this offer will be assessed again to help deal with the problem,” said Sudikerta.
