Buy Gravel / Pebble by the truckload

Does anyone know where I can go and inspect and buy gravel / pebbles by the truckload. I've seen a lot of places selling bags of various sized pebbles, but I need a truckload to do my driveway. I asked a local, but he gave me a truckload of directions instead of pebbles. ;)

Seriously, just stand out on any larger highway near you and wait till a truck comes by and ask them - they will either have a load of the stuff you want or will get it. Price is contentious, as usual.

I've seen lots places that sell stones etc. on Jl Kerobokan north of Lio square. Also on the Ngurah Rai bypass past sanur.

I go out on my main road and have serious trouble not getting hit my trucks ferrying coral and passir (various sizes) past me. It all seems to be heading south. Truck loads used to sell for IDR600K but that's gone up tto 1 juta now. The closer you get to the "rich" south the more it costs - and rightly so! I've built 2 villas here in Karangasem that way but DPH if you know better then have at!

Ha! Intentionally, unintentionally, either way you're hilarious Markit. After asking my local friend for simpler directions, I've been riding around all morning and found that what I'm after is called Batu Koral. You can only get it in bags, as far as know, at about rp.25.000 per bag (you need about 60 to get 1m3. Therefore rp1.500.000 per 1m3) it adds up pretty quickly. The only other option I found is small grey river stones which are a little larger than Batu Koral and are rp800.000 per 1m3(i.e. per small truckload i.e. A carry). I only found one place that would sell it by the carry load though. Sorry, I wasn't clear in my opening post. I'm after ATTRACTIVE gravel/pebbles (Batu Koral) not the koral you use to mix with cement. I'm not after the usual Batu Sikat driveway either, I just want a loose gravel/pebble driveway. Basically, I think a loose gravel/pebble driveway is pretty rare here, therefore there's no-one supplying "pretty" stones in bulk. I could buy as many bags as I need but, at a large volume, they're twice as expensive than the small river stones you can buy in bulk.

They probably sell them in bags but there is one place opposite Arena, where the aeroplane is on the roof, that has mounds of pebble and different size granite, or whatever, in the yard.

If you are going for bulk pretty stones then best go to the source in Seraya where a bag used to cost 20k not sure how much they are now but it won't be much more - they come from the ocean and are picked from the beach in white - red - black - and green.

In my pre-married, pre-fatherhood days, I would have loved a little East Bali adventure like this . . . still would, but living in Bali is a bit like living dog years in reverse. You have to live 7 years here to get 1 year's worth of stuff done. (Ok, that's an exaggeration, but you get the gist.)

I'm (again) not sure what this actually means... We here in the wilds of east Bali are a massive 1.5 hours by 2 and 4 lane highway away, with our very own "Hardys" to prove our levels of civilization. There is unfortunately absolutely nothing "adventurous" about the place. Trust me, your wife will not become a widow or your daughter an orphan if you dare to make the safari over here. I'm told that they've actually stopped eating Christians too.

Just a little update on this. I grossly miscalculated the cost of the attractive stones. In fact, you'd need about 190 bags to make up 1m3. This means you'd need to spend about rp4.8 million per 1m3. This was way too much for me. In the meantime though, I'd found the existence of Batu Koral Pecah Satu Dua (I think they mean 1/2 inch, but that's not how it was described to me.) This sized stone is perfectly fine for a gravel driveway as long as you like grey. The larger stone (Koral Pecah Tiga Empat) is just too big for comfortably walking on. I paid rp200.000 per Carry (small truck) load. Each load is about 1m3. If you order in bulk though, you can get a large truck load (~8m3) for about rp1 million . . . I think, I forget the exact price now. So the result is acceptable for the short term, but when I've got a spare couple of days, I might try Markit's idea of heading to the source of the attractive stones and making a deal with someone. There's a space around the back of the house that's waiting to be filled, so I'll just move all the Koral Pecah Satu Dua to there if I'm able to find a more attractive, and affordable, alternative.
