balinews President Joko Widodo has instructed law enforcers to get tough on Indonesia’s rampant piracy and copyright infringement, arguing that the illegal practices have hurt the country’s creative industry. The president called authorities’ enforcement efforts “inconsistent,” evidenced by how easy Indonesians can access pirated goods. “We need to start taking care [of the piracy issue] and this effort must be continuous,” Joko said. “We must be consistent if we want this problem to go away.” The president on Monday welcomed recording artists and musicians as well as records executives at the State Palace. Also present at the meeting was National Police chief Gen. Badrodin Haiti and detective division chief Comr. Gen. Budi Waseso. In March, the US Trade Representative issued a survey which identified Indonesia as among the top ten countries to sell significant amounts of counterfeit goods. The 2014 survey also highlighted Harco Glodok shopping center in West Jakarta, known as the archipelago’s largest trade center for electronics, where pirated goods are sold in the open and vendors operate without fear of arrest or lawsuits.
