Today as usual doing some googling was referred to old Balipod posts, and was amazed at all the people that then familiar I no longer see. I for one am hoping for a return to the site that we once knew, happily contributed to, and gained from. Let's give it a renewed start!

Maybe some of those people you were familiar with and no longer see are banned....:ghost:
Unlike other forums this one doesn't indicate which member is no longer able to contribute.

The reality is Facebook groups are becoming more popular than sites like this. New people do join the forum everyday, so I think it is a matter of trying to encourage these people to not be shy and start posting. If anyone has any ideas let me know.

I noticed many joined and posted but, because of the aggressive tone of some senior members responses, imo.....they were deterred from reposting and left.
If I notice a new member I say welcome and hope that even if my reply, or any other posts, may be controversial....they are civil.
The scope of this Forum is Bali and limits general conversation....other forums tend to ramble and are not as focussed as Balipod. I suggest....if members wish to chat about other thread titles they should be able to do so without fear of others limiting debate to Bali. There are many subjects which, although not directly associated with Bali, may have information helpful to members, especially expats.
mugwump...you started the thread and Admin is asking for ideas...maybe you can help.

G'day forum folks from a new member. I have been reading some of the posts on the forum for a few weeks now and have now gained clearance to make my first post. So here goes.
I've been following with interest the postings in regards to moving to Bali as I am making a move there myself in July. There's been a variety of advice for folks some of it good natured, some of it forthright and some of it just cranky but all of it interesting to me. I'll be keeping my postings on the positive side of the ledger and look forward to contributing and learning as I go.
Cheers to all.

Hi Steve,
Welcome to Balipod. Once you can determine your objectives in Bali please submit them, and I am sure you will receive help.
As has often been mentioned before it is always smart to try renting perhaps at a homestay for a while to get the feel of the place and where you would best be situated. Once that is done and you find an area of preference try leasing for no more than a year (the usual minimum available). This will provide even better information for longer term consideration.
Good luck.

Hi Again Steve,
The guys in the shadows have had to change their inventory over the years, and that is probably a greater factor than your age. Just up the road from Jl. Sanggingan in Kedewatan is a very good and reasonable Balinese eatery named Ibu Mangku. Te hotels in the area are a bit pricier than some, but it is a nice area. Email me here when you get close to coming and I may b able to help as one of my staff has a sister in hotel management in that area.

Thanx for the welcome mugwump. I have taken 12 months leave without pay from my job and will be studying Bahasa at Cinta Bahasa in Ubud (Jl.Sanggingan) and have booked 2 weeks accom' just up the road whilst I look for something longer term.
I first visited Bali in 1982 on a surf trip and spent a month there, then a couple more trips followed before I started venturing further afield. Medan onto Nias, Padang to Mentawai, Java, Sumbawa and Timor over the years.
I hadn't spent much time in Bali itself for about 17 years so I decided to revisit a couple of years ago. Yep, things have changed but I was expecting that.
I also found that outside of the main tourist areas that a lot of areas remain beautiful and peaceful. I've been back over 4 times in the last 2 years to get a feel for different areas, check out the prospects of living in Bali, wet season and dry, surf spots that remain relatively quiet and clean as well as checking out Cinta Bahasa before shelling out study fees that I'm hoping will continue throughout my 12 months.
I don't need extravagant accom' and noted on my last 2 visits the ad's outside the Bintang supermarket and poles/fences in the area. I was interested in some land or small villa but after my first couple of trips decided that I wouldn't be comfortable with the legal arrangements over there.
As you can see, I'm not rushing into this and I'm not quite an Indo rookie but I still have a lot to learn, that I want to learn so any advice or tips are most welcome.
Will Bali be a place for me to live longer term ? Well that's one reason I'm coming over and I'll have a better idea in 12 months time.
Steve R.
p.s. 1982 walking along Jalan Legian at night I would be approached by guys out of the shadows...'Mista, you want hashish?'.
2014 walking along Jalan Legian at night I would be approached by guys out of the neon........'Mista, you want viagra?'.
:) Guess I look a little older these days.

was away from this community for a while …. tried to come back but got a bit bamBOOZled by the new set-up …. and as Markit would say … if you try and try and fail …. furk-it ….

Steve one thing that you will quickly learn is that you are not studying bahasa. Bahasa actually means language.
eg bahasa Balinese, bahasa German.....Cheers.
