[QUOTE]Bali prosecutors want an Australian man allegedly caught smoking a joint on the beach to serve up to 12 years in jail.
Nicholas James Langan, 24, was arrested about 1am on January 27 at a beach in Canggu, north of Kuta, for smoking a marijuana joint.
Police seized the 0.1 gram joint and a small bag of marijuana weighing 0.86 grams.
Also arrested was Hanung Pekik Hermantoro, 25, a driver for The Green Room Villas where the Queensland painter was staying.
Prosecutor Deni Iswanto on Thursday finalised the charges against the men, pushing for Langan to face a maximum 12 years jail for drug possession.

[QUOTE]Indonesian prosecutors on Tuesday sought jail sentences of 18 years for an American man and 15 years for his girlfriend if they are found guilty of murdering the woman's mother while vacationing on the resort island of Bali last year.
The prosecutors told the court that Tommy Schaefer and Heather Mack, who appeared in court with their 2-week-old daughter, were guilty of premeditated murder. The panel of judges could ignore the sentencing request and decide to impose the maximum, death by a firing squad, if it convicts them.
"The defendant has committed sadistic acts to her own mother," chief prosecutor Eddy Arta Wijaya told the court at Mack's trial. "However, we've decided to be lenient because she repeatedly expressed remorse and has a newborn baby."

Less than 1 gram of Marijuana = 12 years
Murder = 15 - 18 years
My Brain after hearing this =

Your brain is thinking western, Indonesian thinks drugs are more dangerous then murder.
The number of murders in Indonesia are next to none, the number of family that are affected by drugs are !!!!!!!heaps
Look at Singapore you get 3 years for a head job?
Rangi
My Brain is not thinking Western. Its thinking that smoking a joint down the beach does not equal 80% of a Murder charge.
In 2012 in Indonesia there was 1456 official Murders. Although the population of Indonesia is huge, I still would not consider that next to none. Also I suspect that the number is a lot higher with a lot of deaths not classed as murder for what ever reason. I for one had one of my best mates (javanese) Murdered by his wife last year in Bali. Despite pleas from the family to investigate the police did nothing.
Official cause of death was he slipped over backwards in his home, hit his head and died.

look at the Jarkarta decision on the 2 school teachers . amazing
and yes 1500 murders in nothing in a population this size . it peanuts
Fred2
1456 = 0.6%, Australia is 256 = 1.1%, New Zealand is 41 =0.9% as you see Indonesia is the lowest for murders.
Pedophiles and Drug deals are treated the same, Indonesia thinks they cannot be rehabilitated and thats why they get longer jail terms.
If you have one joint, one tablet or any drugs in Indonesia you are up **** creek. In western countries you would get a warning?

Around 41 Indonesians die every day according to a contentious study used by the government to create this 'national emergency' and apply harsh punishment.....

You need to watch yes minister, anyone can do a study & make the numbers work. Do you really think any study\numbers in Indonesia would be correct
Over 800 die every day from cigarette smoking and there is no emergency nor punishment….???? is smoking illegal in any country????????

No one has died from smoking Marijuana... ..
Hey I live here and respect the laws and obey them as I choose to live here, and lets face it in every country there are laws we don't agree with.
But realistically this is ridiculous

Correct I smoke my last joint on way to airport to come here!
I think 12 years for a partial joint and some weed is Crazy. Maybe if the Idiot denied being a pot smoker and did same as local ( who thru out a small bag of weed when police arrived) who stated it was his 1st time , maybe would have gotten less time ? never know . and lets not forget the great relationship OZ and RI have at the moment . maybe prosecutor wanted to show OZ max time max penalty .

With the exception of perhaps Thailand, Asian countries in general have a huge hangup with drugs due mainly, I think, to historical reasons...the European colonizers were happy for the locals to be stoned on opium so they would not resist foreign rule and exploitation. I recently went to five pharmacies in Singapore to get a lawful prescription for four tablets of valium, but all said that they do not sell these type of drugs... Still haven't got it filled, even though it was written by a Singapore licensed doctor to address a legitimate medical condition. As to previous posts and Jokowi's own assertion of a drugs problem in Indonesia, a better solution would be to address the reason why people need to switch off and get high as kite. Maybe a little introspection and action to turnaround a corrupt country that offers its citizens little chances to be gainfully employed and get ahead would be more effective at addressing the issue than shooting a few foreigners who are most likely dealing the stuff among themselves?
