Hi to Adam and all of interest, Returned from Leste two days ago and found it an interesting destination. My impression was of certainly a developing country w/o many advantages found in Bali, but the people were pleasant and not in your face aggressive. There is a crime problem apparent in Dili, but with a decent hotel no apparent reason for the faint hearted. Prices are higher than Bali for comparable services and accommodations, however the traveler can obtain their needs w/o privation. My personal interest was for opportunities fishing and information took some digging. Fortunately earlier information was confirmed but personal experience will wait for the future. As a link provided by Adam pointed to Com a village some six hours drive from Dili apparently has fishing boats other than prahus available with Australian charters. This is only from hearsay w/o personal confirmation. It was a positive experience and feel the place has a future for greater tourism.

Out of interest any experience or information on Indo immigration there? I have heard there are various outlying sites where the Indo immi are much more amenable and cheaper - lots! For instance a friend (yes, no.idea as hard as that may be to believe) reports getting his Kitas for 1 million!!! from Timor.

Not sure about your question as my experience was only in Leste, not Indonesia. Maybe your referring to West Timor where that angle may be true, but if so would a Kitas restrict you only to that area where the Kitas application originated? As an aside my brief exposure would lead me to speculate that Leste (East Timor) would be an easy place to work, invest and live as many people seemed eager and curious about my interest there. There were two academics from the US at the hotel where I stayed whose purpose was to helpful create infrastructure under the auspices of the US State Dept.

I think Markit's question has merit....I'm sure he meant the RI Embassy in Dili in Timor Leste among some others in foreign countries. I googled for the Timor Leste Embassy and came up with this....Error It doesn't say they do visas there only refers to diplomats so, as Markit asked, if anyone has practical information on other places that is friendly.....might be useful. I used our visits to the KL Embassy then take some travel in Malaysia...but if they are going to be ****ty....better have alternates.
