Shipping personal items to North America

We've lived in Bali for 2 years and will be returning to Canada in June. We'd like to ship some items that are too big to take on the flight, but we don't require a "we're-shipping-the-contents-of-an-entire-house" container. The items we want to ship include a few boxes of books, area rugs, clothing that won't fit in our luggage, and some Balinese knick-knacks (for lack of a better term). Can anyone recommend a relatively inexpensive and reliable way to ship these goods?

If it's just a few things then you are better off taking them on the plane. Alternatively you can rent a portion of a container but that's only really viable with more than nick-nacks. A friend went to the airline with 2 large boxes and declared them as sport articles - many airlines have a contingency to let you get away with over luggage as long as it's something to do with sport - go figure.
